More life themes from Sylvia Browne's books . . .
Temperance -
Usually, the entity dealing with a Temperance theme is dealing with an addiction of one kind or another. The challenge here is to avoid extremes. Perhaps then entity has conquered the actual addiction but is still dealing with a residue of feelings about it. The key to combating the fanaticism that often characterizes those with Temperance as a theme is moderation - the true meaning of temperance.
Poverty -
The theme of Poverty appears most frequently in Third World countries, yet it can be even more of a challenge in affluent societies. Some entities with Poverty as a theme may even have all they need to be comfortable and yet feel poor. With progress, the frenzy fades and is slowly replaced by a sense of bliss as the realization comes that the trappings of this world are transitory things whose importance will quickly pass.

Interesting. Reminds me of Zen, in a way, in how we ourselves increase or decrease our personal suffering by seeking or not seeking inner balance, and by our own mindset or perceptions.

ITA, I thought these two were interesting themes.
I know Atheists IRL and they are anything but hopeless or goal-less. They are very active in their communities, volunteer work, have high ethics and personal integrity, and believe in working for the greater good -- of all life, the planet, and so on. While I think a spiritual path is awesome and empowering, and if your inner spirit calls you to seek it out, than it is something that you need for a good life. :) If you are not so called, I think you can still have a good and happy life, and a fulfilling one as well.
Perhaps your friend *is* feeling an inner spirit nudging him, but can't accept that nudge. Many people are very separated in their body/mind/spirit totality and when that happens, each part of them suffers.
