Heavy thoughts ...

I must have too much spare time on my hands. Lately I've been thinking alot about life, destiny -- all that good stuff.  Some questions I'd like your opinion on ...

* Do you think each of us have a destiny in life?  Is it something we were born into?  Or do we totally make it up as we go along?

* Do you think destiny is preordained? Therefore things like our time of birth and death are already determined? Can we change this destiny in any way?

I'm always impressed by the insightful comments here.  Please feel free to share your thoughts ...

I don't feel everything is planned out ahead of time. I believe we each come into this life with certain lessons to learn, and that we'll be presented with those lessons repeatedly until we get it. But as for being destined to live a certain life... no. I believe we're here just to experience Life. The way I see it, if we were preordained to do certain things, we wouldn't have been given free will. And the fact that we do have free will, means that if we don't like where our lives are going, we have the power to change them.

Good question! I'm looking forward to seeing what others say. :-)

Hi gnd, good questions.

"Do you think each of us have a destiny in life? Is it something
we were born into? Or do we totally make it up as we go along?"

I don't think we each have a destiny as such, though I think that we come into each life with certain goals that we set at a soul level before incarnating. I think that we choose the place, time, family structure/dynamics etc that is just perfect for those lessons that we set out to learn and the goals we set out to achieve. How we get to those goals I think is a mixture of free will and help from the universe that send us messengers and other signs that help to point us in the right direction, but always give us the choice of whether we ignore or take notice of them. (However, I think that the more we ignore them probably the more insistent the universe becomes in trying to get our attention lol).

"Do you think destiny is preordained? Therefore things like our time
of birth and death are already determined? Can we change this
destiny in any way?"

I do think that we chose the time of our birth and perhaps the time of our death, but I'm not so sure that means that they are preordanined. For instance we may choose to incarnate into a life at a particular time and choose to remain in that life until we are able to fulfil a particular goal, but that doesn't mean we necessarily pre-set the time we will achieve this. As for changing our destiny - I think that we constantly do that with every choice we make because no two choices are going to lead to exactly the same point. As a further point on this one I also believe that we don't always "remember" what our goals are once we incarnate into a life and so just in case we aren't going in any way along the path we intended we set ourselves an alarm call that is sure to grab our attention and wake us up so that we pay attention and rethink the direction we were previously headed in. Just my humble opinion, but I have had personal experience of this and I am sure that many others have too, but have not perhaps thought of it that way.

Look forward to hearing what others think :-)

I know what you mean about having certain goals to achieve in life.

I don't really buy into a set destiny for each person in each of their reincarnations... I believe we DO choose the lessons we wish to work on, our identity, with whom we're born, and others whom we will be with as both teacher and student, or with whom we have Karmic work to do with. I also believe that the interaction between us, other people, other lifeforms, the Universe, Nature is flexible and flowing. I view each lifetime as time to continue my evolution as a spiritual being, and working with what comes into my life, using lessons learned, wisdom obtained, and the struggle for inner discernment is all part of that.

* Do you think destiny is preordained? Therefore things like our time of birth and death are already determined? Can we change this destiny in any way?"

No, I don't think destiny is preordained. See above. ;) I'm still contemplating as to whether we have chosen the exact form of our death and birth, but I do think we choose to be born to particular people as our parents, as part of our evolutionary process, and that both the parents and the child have lessons and Karma to work on from previous lifetimes and functions as both teacher and student to each other.

Editing my post to add something I call "nudges" that sound like the "alarm bells/calls" someone else mentioned here. :P I feel my Goddess sends people, books, experiences/happenings in my life at various times as "nudges" for me to learn and continue to evolve as Spirit, also. While I have complete free will, if I'm "awake" enough, I can recognize these nudges as opportunities and act on them.

Interesting questions! Thanks for the "mental stretch." :D

For me, it's been a decades long process to learn to recognize and work with my intuition. :) I think I always was tuned to my inner wisdom, but in the normal process of socialization, was taught not to trust my inner voice or conclusions or insight. It was not until studying Zen and learning to meditate, discovering Wicca, and studying a martial art in my very late 40s, that I was "reunited" with my inner voice and intuitive sense. The task at hand was to learn to trust and respect -- and to follow with confidence -- my inner directive sense. :P Recognizing and responding to "nudges" took some years. There are still moments I am intimidated by others' perspectives and old conditioning, but now I use my inner "checks and balances" to measure and interpret what comes into my life. There is an almost physical "click" within me that confirms for me the recognition of the right path before me. It just takes a bit of solitude and deep slow breathing to establish my inner focus. and TRUSTING that when the timing to act arrives, I will know what to do. It is a journey of taking back my personal power. Gypsy

"Often I think heck, no one's really keeping an eye on me, so who'd care if I do this, or don't do that ... then I get caught. Many times I've gone out of my way to avoid confrontation but I just can't get away with anything!"

I read recently that if you feel like you can't get away with things then it's because your karma is speeding up and giving you the opportunity to repay karma immediately so that it doesn't build up and carry forward with you to the next life. So what may feel like you can't get away with anything might turn out to be a blessing in disguise ;-)
