I thought the book was a great suspenseful book and I couldn't put it down. I didn't take any of it very seriously, knowing how fictional works "base" on research, but always take it where it's never been before, LOL! :D I know there has been a lot of upset about it being very misleading and so forth, but I've kept myself out of the conflict because to me it's just fiction, plain and simple. As for Mel Gibson's "The Passion," both my DH and I aren't up for in-your-face violence, blood & gore, so we skipped that one.
I *do* like movies with a spiritual kind of base in the storyline, the "feel good" kind of movies. I like action, suspense, mystery, romance, scifi. I just don't like borderline pornography, bad guys being made out to be heroes or sympathetic characters that get away with "it," or up close & personal violence, blood, gore, sadism, etc.
And, yes, I'll see the movie! I love Tom Hanks and have seen him play aging or older characters before, as well as a host of distinctive ones. He can be a real "chameleon" in his roles. I look forward to seeing what he does with this role. ;)
Also, just rubbing it (circularly) on your clean shirt or with a hanky takes care of a lot of it. Rented DVDs or library check outs get a lot of abuse. Also depends on how "tolerant" your player is... I was having to take a lot of DVDs back to Blockbuster's because of skipping and so on. One of their managers there told me to rub the heck out of it on my shirt. Works! Who'd a thought it?! LOL! :D
I can understand what you mean about Jesus and Mary being married. That is a tough one to truelly believe. But, the Davinci Code put the "feminine" back in religion for quite a few people. And, being a strong woman myself, I think it is great that the book shows how much of an impact women had in early Christianity! Love and Light, R-
Yes, I'll see the movie...I enjoyed the book, it really kept me on the edge all the way to the end! I don't think this book is in the same league as Passion of the Christ though. Dan Brown's book is pure fiction, or at least, that was the author's intention. This is documented in his interviews...because his story involved biblical content (always an emotional hotbed), and the possibility that a secret group would try to rewrite history by revealing that knowledge, well, it's an intriguing concept all around...I thought it made for a great yarn...especially if you can put your religious beliefs aside while reading it...I found the story so outrageous that this didn't present a problem.
What I found really humorous (and a bit scary) was how seriously the Catholic church took this work of FICTION...I mean honestly, free speech and all...there's even a book published that's a rebuttal to the Da Vinci code, how absurd. The Da Vinci Code is a novel...but if some folks choose to believe Jesus was married, based on this book, well, so be it...I'm not into controlling anyone's else's beliefs.
On the other hand, I can understand why the ideas in this book would definitely be considered "heresy" by the Catholic Church.
I did not see passion of the Christ because I don't care for graphic violence or bloodshed on any level. And that movie was not intended to be a good yarn like Dan Brown's book, this film was meant to present a dramatization of Christ's final days. Different venue altogether.
Yes, it was Mary Magdalen (sp?), which as I recall was shortened from 'Mary FROM Magdala.' Two of the books The DaVinci Code was based on (Holy Blood, Holy Grail and The Messianic Legacy) present a pretty convincing (and fascinating!) case for the marriage btw.
