Can violence ever be justified?  Does it solve anything?  Can it be the defining factor in decision making?

Looking forward to good discussion...

It can't be justified, Bink.

The only time I see it as being appropriate is in the defense of self or others.

I would have to argue though that violense IS natural for all animals, including humans. The difference is that humans have the intellectual capacity to look for other alternatives.

In general, I am anti-violence and anti-war, but there are sometimes extenuating circumstances that merit an increase in physical action.

For instance, when a bully rules the school yard, and someone stands up to him or her and whups their butt in front of everyone else, the outcome is usually "no more bully."

My thoughts are that in life, there is life and death to balance it. There is a cosmic dance of balance, the light & the dark whirling in & out of itself. We are that light and dark. We have that energy within us because the Universe is within us, in every cell in us. I think our journey as Spirit is to learn that delicate dance of light & dark, life and death. We need both. It's a hard concept to understand. Or accept our part in both.

Something must die, a form of life, must die, so other forms of life may live. Animals die to give us nourishment. They die to give up habitat so we can build cities for our burgeoning human populations. Plants die so that we may eat them. They die so cities may be built. Even microbes in water die in the process of an animal or a plant absorbing the water. Life and death are Nature's balance. It is how life continues. The slaughter of animals, screaming in pain, puts meat in neat little packages in our grocery stores. Do plants scream when ripped out by their roots from the soil? We don't know. We do know talking to our plants makes them grow and be healthy. We kill and torture animals in labs for medical research to save human lives. Life & death is contained within our own bodies, and in all the things we surround ourselves with, that we eat or drink.

There are some wars that make sense, like WWII. There are many that do not and even with historical perspective, do not make sense, other than the imbalance of greed and power over others to force philosophies or religions on the conquered, or just to take in greed and control. I think patriarchy or matriarchy or anarchy are all extremes. Too much "male" or dark energies. Too much "light" or inward energies. Too much out of control energies.

I don't think as a species we have figured this out yet or found the balance we need to become fully Spirit.

Your story reminds me of something that happened to my son when he was 5.
