I saw The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe this weekend. (It's a good movie, by the way.) You hear a lot about the Christian themes in the books (Aslan as a Christ-figure, etc.), but I found myself wondering whether there are any themes that relate to other religious beliefs.

You know, I have to giggle a bit at the current pushing of religious overtones emphasized with this new movie version. :P My DD & I are Wiccan. We read the book and watched the animated movie version when she was small.

Never once thought it was a "Christian" story. I could see the death/sacrifice of the God at Samhain, to be reborn at Yule, to the Goddess. To grow to strength again, for all things to grow and renew, and then die in the harvest, sacrificing himself for the wellbeing of all, with harvest abundance through the winter months. :)

We saw it, talked about it, as an allegory. To teach us about gratitude to the Goddess and God, for all Their gifts. Teach us the importance of loving others, and to see the importance of the wellbeing of ALL, not just ourselves. Generosity of spirit. Importance of sacrifice for the benefit of others, to love unreservedly, to trust the Goddess and the God. To understand that not all are evolved enough to respect all life, but feel threatened by those different or appearing more powerful. That we are unconditionally loved. And that we are also divine spirits, on a sacred journey to evolve fully as Spirit.

I'd say the story can have whatever relevance you wish to give it. :D
