Today is Mardi Gras/Fat Tuesday/Shrove Tuesday... will you be acknowledging or celebrating in any way?

Tomorrow the season of Lent starts on the Christian calendar... do you practice any form of self-denial as part of your spiritual path, whether now or at another time of the year?

The extent of our celebration will be having pancakes for dinner tonight.

No, nothing special. It's not part of DH's and my spiritual practices.

I'm not catholic, so I don't observe Lent, but I always wondered why "Christians" behave the way they do at Mardi Gras celbrations... of course not that all Catholics do, but from what I've heard and seen on TV, there's lots of immoral un-Christian behavior that goes on at the parades and parties, etc. I thought the purpose of Lent was to re-enact the trials of Christ.. how does lifting one's shirt to get beads or getting falling-down drunk anything like what Christ did? Sorry if I offended, just a rant/question.

Well, you have to remember first that Mardi Gras is not part of Lent.

You're so right that Mardi Gras is a CULTURAL event nowadays. I remember as a Catholic kid growing up in the 50s, we'd have a favorte Sunday meal before Ash Wednesday, with dessert, etc. We'd each pick something to sacrifice: candy, desserts, an hour of TV a nite, alcohol for the adults, beer after work, # of cigs smoked a day, snacks, and so on. ;) Also, Fridays were NO MEAT and fasting days. Adults had light food and one meal at dinner. It was fish, pancakes, eggs, etc.

Our family did not celebrate Mardi Gras. It was something people faraway did to have fun, parties and treats before starting the sacrifices of Lent. Our culture didn't celebrate it. We watched on TV, though. :P On Ash Wednesday we would go to church at night and there was a ritual with the priest, then we'd kneel at the Communion rail and the priest would dip his thumb in ashes, and make a cross on everyone's forehead to symbolize death, and Jesus' dying for us. It was all very mystical as a child. :)) It was so kewl to walk around with ashes on our foreheads! :P I always gave up desserts or candy/snacks.

WOW! :D Down the ol' memory lane!

~~Nope, we do not do anything for Mardi Gras here~~

~~I am currently in self-denial until I finish school. I hope I will have time to read, relax, garden, bicycle, and all kinds of fun stuff!! I will have to work but my free time will not need to be spent studying~~

Many Christian denominations observe Lent besides Roman Catholics.

I just like Fat Tuesday because of the parade and partying! LOL. We have an awesome parade that goes down the Main Street in Dunedin here and it's a blast! But, Lent...naaaa, just like New Year's resolutions....if you are going to stop a bad habit, you'll do it when your ready...not when everyone says your supposed. By the way...I am not really Christian either, but I do have to say Catholic churches are beautiful to look at!
