I live in Oregon, the only state that has a "Death with Dignity" act, and personally have neutral feelings about it. But it is certainly NOT a licence for depressed people to end their life. As stated:
"An adult who is capable, is a resident of Oregon, and has been determined by the attending physician and consulting physician to be suffering from a terminal disease, and who has voluntarily expressed his or her wish to die, may make a written request for medication for the purpose of ending his or her life in a humane and dignified manner."
In the body of the act:
"one or more consultations as necessary between a state licensed psychiatrist or psychologist and a patient for the purpose of determining that the patient is capable and not suffering from a psychiatric or psychological disorder or depression causing impaired judgment."
soo, again, I'm neutral, but it's a far stretch between the reality of the act and the fears of it leading to physically healthy, depressed people being given the means to end it all.
Thanks, Nikki.
This makes a great deal of sense, because the person, in question is going to die anyway, so why make them suffer.
When I was talking about depression and the right to die, it was with the understanding that came with the poll about anyone being given the right to die who wanted to die. That I cannot condone.
My Cousin had terminal cancer, but with the help of medication she was in pain but dealt with it. I was not around towards the end of her life, so I cannot tell how she was doing then. She died a few days after Christmas, a couple of years ago, and I will miss her. I know that many people are so doped up on pain medication that they have no life at all. They should have the right to end their lives. People that are in a state where they are only alive because of respirators and machines that pump their blood should have the right to die. That is why a living will is so important to make sure that keeping you alive does not drain your family of all their resources to put cash in some hospitals pockets.
I guess under the statutes that you described, I would support such a bill and would hope that my state like yours would pass such a bill.
Be gentle with yourself. Be kind to yourself.
You may not be perfect, but you are all You've got to work with.
