Our friend "M" (nschoolagain) posed this question in another thread and it sounded like another great topic to post. Thanks, M!
Several years ago a bunch of us got into a discussion about such things like being *drawn* to particular things (certain cultures, places) and the "whys/what is it" behind such feelings. Also things like deja vu and such. And I'd mentioned the concept of "genetic memory." CAN we remember our forefathers memories???? We carry so many traits beyond just the usual hair color and such . . . like, mannerisms and speech rhythms, etc. IS it possible for memories/feelings to carry over??
I have a talent for language, and in my educational career have studied Latin, Spanish, French and Russian. Thirty-five years later, I can't remember much of any of them except French. I still can speak French like a native with a little practice. I also speak it with a slight German accent, though none of my teachers were German. When I was in Munich in Feb, 1969, several people on the street called me by name... not MY name, but the name of the person that I looked exactly like! They were confused that I didn't respond in German! I apparently have a twin.
I dream of places and people in other times. I attribute this more to past life memories than genetic memory, but I'm open to suggestion and look forward to your responses.

How would you account then, for the documented cases of identical twins separated at birth, raised many miles from each other, who meet as adults.
I don't have any documented "proof", evidence or such. I din't even say that I fully believe it, I just said that my experience made me go "Hmmmmmm*?? I was just posing a thought to ponder. This is a *Faith* board. I cannot prove or disprove the existence of God/god/goddess/Creator either, but such things are open for discussion here, are they not? I was just curious as to whether or not anyone else had any thoughts or experiences to share. If no one ever pondered anything prior to proof would we still be living on a "flat" world?
Blessings, "M"
Hi, Carol, welcome!
I thought you might be interested to find out that "Genetic Memory" in humans has been studied by scientists for at least 4 decades, here is one early document:
Marshall Nivenberg, from the National Heart Institute, provides insight into the actual DNA/RNA mechanics of "genetic memory" in an article titled Genetic Memory published in 1968 in JAMA 206:1973-77.
Genetic memory is already an established fact in animals; how does a kitten separated from his mother at birth grow up and act like a cat? (otherwise known as "instinct")
Cheers,
Nikki

In my field, Psychology, we have a similar approach. We have to be very careful to differentiate between that which is merely observation, and that which is actually proved, or evidential. I want to listen to, record, and try to *understand* people's experiences, responses, and behaviors, but to do that properly, with any ethic whatsoever, I must maintain a great deal of respect for science. It all works very well together.
Want to point out, too, that being a skeptic is not as awful as it may sound. ;o) Often people attribute skepticism to disagreement, when in fact skepticism is a kind of suspension of belief that gently waits on the evidence. Smart!
I've had some great/fun/interesting experiences like the ones described in this thread. There are other possible explanations for them in addition to genetic memory, which is a hypothesis that is sometimes referred to as "racial memory"; inherited ancestral knowledge, and memory. All very interesting. There are several hypotheses about these types of experiences, one of which includes the possibility that some memory, and behaviors are passed on, or "learned" by baby, in utero. (having little to do with the mother transferring the so called "genetic memory" via encoded genes)
Here's something else somewhat related to this discussion, that popped into my head today... :D

Akashic Records
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"The Akashic Records (Akasha is a Sanskrit word meaning "sky", "space" or "aether") are said to be a collection of mystical knowledge that is stored in the aether; i.e. on a non-physical plane of existence. The concept is common in some New Age religious groups. The Akashic Records are said to have existed since the beginning of Creation. Just as we have various specialty libraries (e.g., medical, law), there are said to exist various Akashic Records (e.g., human, animal, plant, mineral, etc). Most writings refer to the Akashic Records in the area of human experience."
...
"The Akasha is said to be the library of all events and responses concerning Human Consciousness in all realities. Every human therefore supposedly contributes and has access to the Akashic Records. It is claimed that to gain access into the Akashic Records, every individual human can become the physical medium, and various techniques (e.g., yogic breathing, visualizations) can be employed to quiet the mind, become a "witness", and achieve the focused, preconscious state necessary to access the Records. While in the Akashic Records and viewing the past, both the events and responses are said to be visible. This can be compared to seeing a full color movie with a plot and characters. When viewing the future, the events are known, but the responses are only probable. Based on an individual's responses in the past, the Akashic seer/reader can investigate probable future responses and give the highest future probability. A simple illustration of this might be witnessing several alternate endings to the main characters in a movie (e.g., Run, Lola, Run). However, at some point in the evolution of the Akashic reader, a state of unification and awareness can be achieved whereby even the future responses are known with absolute clarity instead of only as a probability."
I remember reading about this decades ago, so thought I'd share. ;))
