Any experiences with Unity Church?
| Tue, 06-06-2006 - 2:07pm |
Hi,
just wondering if anyone has had any experiences with the Unity Church? I am thinking about attending a service and am wondering if it is right for me.I especially enjoy the emphasis on meditation.
Thanks,
Kelly

Hi Kelly, and hi Nikki too.
'Scuse me for jumping in, I hope I'm not being rude but I thought I'd reply to your question too, Kelly.
We have two Unity churches in our area (around Nashville) and even though the services are very similar in format, the "feel" is quite different, with our (smaller and newer) church being more open and casual. Ours is a very dynamic and celebratory church, the other Unity in our area is more quiet and reserved.
In both churches the services tend to be rather similar to more traditional churches in form if not in content - there is an opening prayer, songs, announcements, reading of the "Daily Word," meditation, the lesson, and closing song and prayer. The meditation starts as a guided meditation by the minister and then we go into a relatively brief period of silence (2 or 3 minutes). It's a little frustrating for some that the meditations so short, but we have many in our congregation who are not regular meditators and start getting "antsy." We also have an early service that is primarily contemplative, for those who prefer a longer period of meditation. Many serious Unity students meet in small groups during the week, specifically for discussion of spiritual principles and/or meditation.
Music is a major and spectacular part of our ministry - since we are located in Nashville, there is SO MUCH musical talent in our area (not all "country," either :) ) and our choir (which is about 20% of the church membership) is amazing. We have special music two or three times a month and it's always top-notch, inspiring and uplifting. Our minister (who is female, like many Unity ministers) is quite dynamic and not afraid to "lay it on the line," and we also have a lot of social activities including a monthly movie night, dances, coffee houses (talent shows), etc.
I hope you are able to find a church in your area that meets your needs. Like Nikki said, Science of Mind and other New Thought churches are very similar to Unity in their teachings. Here is a link to our website, which links to other Unity sites, if you'd like to learn more. http://www.unitynashville.org/ And if you are ever in the Nashville area, drop in and see us!
Blessings & Namaste

Your experiences are helping me feel more comfortable with the idea of going. I have a little bit of anxiety about attending a service so I like having an idea what to expect. You both seem to have had great experiences with Unity so I hope I can find a home there too.
Blessings,
Kelly
