Father's Day

Father, Dad, Pop, Daddy, Pere, whatever you call him, we all had one. What are you doing, if anything this year for Father's Day? If you have children, do you celebrate with their father, or stick with just your own?

We are newlyweds with no kids, so it's just our two fathers we worry about. Father's Day this year is on the one-month anniversary of my mother's death, so I know it will be a hard one for my dad. We spent extra on his present. We bought a present and will have dinner with hubby's dad (mine lives thousands of miles away).

My Dad died in '93. I left my Dh two & 1/2 years ago. FIL died a year and 1/2 ago. I guess the girls will try to spend some time w/ their father (I do hope so) ~ but it's all kinda weird anymore ....................
But I often still do things in my father's memory. I wrote a letter to him one time (after his death) read it aloud (to myself) & then burned it to realease it into *everythingness*. When the girls were still young, on his b-day, I'd buy a book for the school library and we would dedicate it in his name. Often, on Father's Day or his b-day, I will bring out one of his favorite books and re-read it. He was an avid reader and bibliophile! Hmmmmmmm seems like I hear "The Black Arrow" calling, or perhaps it's time to go join Robinson on that island again (*wink*) ~~~~ Dad my be gone, but he's not forgotten.

DS used to do medieval battle games.
This is one of those sad/happy combo days. My dad lives in a 24/7 care facility in another state and my stepmom visits him diligently. My dad has Lewy Body Disease. This disease shrinks the brain, and he loses mental functions and suffers similar symptoms to Ahlzeimer's. :(( He also has macular degeneration in both eyes, doesn't see well, and has lost much of his hearing. Last time we visited, a year ago April, he still knew me.
Now I think sometimes he doesn't know my stepmom any more. It is like talking a little bit to a child. His short term memory is very poor and he can't remember things you said 10 minutes ago. We will be going hopefully in early Nov. to visit again. It was heartbreaking to see him. I remember all the wonderful things he did with and for me. He was a good dad. I had a good childhood. I miss him so much...and when I see him it is sooooo hard. Still, his old memories are strong, so we talk of the past, and just sit together on the patio and watch the birds. We were to go this last April, but Mika Dog got very sick in Feb., and our trip $$$ was spent for her vet bills. :(( I feel partly guilty because we haven't gone yet this year, and feel bad that by the time we get there, he won't know us anymore at all...
My DH's dad has been gone many years now. Was gone before our DD was born. DH remembers.
Today, on a brighter note, our DD is over and she brought a London Broil steak to BBQ, plus she made potato salad and giant chocolate chip cookies to have with ice cream for dessert. YUM! :P I made a tossed green salad and thousand island dressing. We should have a feast! :D
So my day is bittersweet.

It's almost 1 year since my dear dad passed. I couldn't make it to the cemetary today to leave flowers at his grave. So I made a heartfelt Father's Day card that I've placed on my coffee table beside a small vase of fresh flowers. Father's Day gifts were always important to him.
I do miss ya Daddy, but I know you're always near.
