Mind over medicine & vice versa

I recently had a laser treatment to get rid on some pesky bumps in a bad place.  My OB/GYN had told me that my "body should take care of them," but since my immune system is currently in shambles, it didn't.  The laser did.  I had a brief moment of shame that I couldn't handle it on my own but am glad to watch them dry up and go away now.

So, the basic question is, at what point do you trust your faith and your own physical resources to heal you, and for what do you go running for modern medicine?  Do you try home remedies and diet/supplements first, or do you call your doctor?

I go to the doctor as a last resort. I try waiting (depending on the seriousness) and then home remedies and then OTC and then as a last resort I go to the doctor.

Fortunately I've been blessed to be healthy but I wouldn't avoid the doctor completely, the medical field has centuries of experience that is built on every day and there are millions of people that work on, and dedicate their entire lives to healing. I've had that brief moment of shame feeling too but really there is no shame in having to ask for help ... no one is totally self sufficient.

I don't have any issues or aversions to medical help, but I do tend to rely on intuition to know when I genuinely need it and when it's nothing.

Until recently, I pretty much left healing up to my body: unless things didn't seem to be getting better, I rarely even thought of mentioning it to my GP.

But my current GP really is watching my blood work-ups like a hawk (I have them twice a year because I'm on cholesterol-lowering meds and the side effects can be caught early if you test...) adn she is telling ME when I need to intervene!

I try using home remedies first, either homeopathic, oils, herbal remedies for general "ills" but if it is bleeding/broken/bad pain then I'm off to the doctor/hospital

It really depends on how long I have been ill and if it could get worse. I have ni medical insurance so I don't go to the doctor as often as I should when I do get sick. I've been lucky so far, Thank God.

<<Most of the time I'll wait it out. My Uncle, he's a Dr, once told me the the human body, given time, will usually heals itself. But...there are times it doesn't, or needs help, that is when I go to running to my Dr.

<<

When things just don't go as they should. Good example...right now I'm in my first trimester of my second pregnancy, well I have horrible morning sickness, no home remedies, and after a variety of different meds, the only medicine that will work is what the give to cancer patience. you might think it's better to suck it up and deal with it, but my first pregnancy I lost 10 pounds with in 8 weeks and was in the ER once or twice every week to have 2 liters of fluids to help keep me hydrated. These med help to stop that. So this is just one of the times I'm glad to go to my Dr and glad to take meds.

I kind of use every method available. I have 4 severely herniated discs in my neck and through yoga, my chiropracter and the occasional muscle relaxer, I have been doing great. My neurosurgeon was so surprised...I had a diagnosis that, within 2 years, I would need my neck completely fused and now it is indefinite.
As for supplement, I agree that they can help. Just be careful with them. I take my multivitamin and extra C and Calcium. If I do take an herbal supplement, I research first.
Conventional medicine is very important too though. My biggest thing, though, is the constant prescribing of drugs...especially controlled substances...I have a D.O., So if he knows he can help me homeopathically, we go that route. So far, he has helped me quite a bit!
