Is Scientology a cult or a religion? Or both? It seems impossible to find out the truth about this ........ whatever it is. LOL! Is anyone a member? Anyone been "inside"? I'm always curious about stuff I know little about : )

I have never been attracted to this religion. Here are some links, though:

http://www.religioustolerance.org/scientol.htm

Here's their official web site:

http://www.scientology.org/

Hope this helps! As for definition of cults, many religions COULD be called that, being as they contain some of the elements. Here's some info on cults:

http://www.religioustolerance.org/cultintro.htm

http://www.religioustolerance.org/cultsign.htm

Hope this helps! :) In the end, only YOU can decide whether a particular religion, so-called cult or spiritual path is right for you.

I don't know much about scientology but based on what I see in the media presented by good ol' Tom Cruise... not much interested :)

This segment on Beliefnet has a Q & A that's very helpful in getting an overview of Scientology.

Aren't there plenty of cults that run under the title "Church of _____"?

I walked into one of the offices once & only found newsprint. I never thought about it again. I found the book one day & thought the reading was worthy spiritually enough to satisfy nothing.

I think they mainly have offices only. The HQ in Geneva is this imposing grey building that looks quite old to me.

Their status is quite controversial they have the Status of "religion" in Switzerland but everybody would refer to it as a cult. I find their practices a bit too wierd to be considered a church or a religion, the fact someone has to pay to belong irks me a lot. I also read a few stories of ex-members and what happen in there is quite scary. It starts like a nice philosophy and spiritual journey and apparently once you are "hooked" the brain washing starts, and some of those ex-members said they were gradually cut from the world as they were told that mingling with non-scientology member would prevent them from developping further on the spiritual plan, and apparently those who want to go out face blackmail.

I remember a about 10 years ago Tom Cruise was invited on a French TV channel for an interview, and the journalist confronted him with scientology and what it does to people, and Tom Cruise was very surprised to hear such thing and went on giving a rosy picture of scientology and how it purify the soul and such. Which lead me to the conclusion that he probably don't get the same treatment as the commoner, he seems more like a "brand ambassador" for the church, they cannot afford to have a celebrity tar their reputation,

Sorry to miss your posting! I never realized or read into the Christian Scientology more as much as most recently. I was just an Undergrad at the time so I had too many other things to understand. I found it on the ave knowing it was scientific somehow except what I needed to know was different in terms of my faith and/or in my own classes.
