QOTW: Proselytizing

Door-to-door missionaries, outreach programs, long-term missionaries to other countries, or just friends eager to share their own path... apologetics takes on many forms. What does your faith include and how do you feel about it? Do you actively proselytize to others? How do you feel/react when others--formally or informally--speak about their religion to you?

The "foot in the door" thing. That would be scary as well as very irritating. I've always been glad I've had big dogs, LOL! And a screen door/storm door. When I open the front door, I automatically click the lock latch on the screen door, talk through it, and my Mika is sitting there looking at the person on the porch very intently. No one puts their hand on the screen door handle, and I don't open it to take a pamphlet or anything. I just say "thank you, but I have a full and satisfying spiritual life. Have a nice day." And I shut the door and don't wait to hear what they might say next.
Fortunately, around here, we don't have a lot of strangers going door to door, so I can spot sales people or proselytizers when Mika barks at them on the sidewalk. I just don't open the door if I am not expecting a repair person or I don't recognize the person.

As for door to door, I see it as a waste of money on their part. Some missionary programs require young people to save a lot throughout their high school years. I imagine it is a good learning experience to save and sacrifice. But they are only going door to door, they are not reaching out to help others by rebuilding their lives.
>>>>>I feel that missionaries who travel to other countries to help build new homes, bridges, water supplies, bring medicine, interact with other cultures and learn about them are doing a great thing. They are bringing the word of God to the people but the people can choose not to listen.<<<<
I wish I could agree with this :-( but I live in one of the countries where they come and build home and such. And they DO force their faith on the locals. It's always about them being god sent offering free gifts in exchange of conversion. Telling locals that they have been suffering until now because they were "non believers" and that god send missionaries to help them. They go on purpose in the most backward region where they will encounter no resistance at all in convertions, they build a new school, houses, have a few humanity project, and of course build a church of somekind somewhere. They have no interests at all in the culture...if they had they would not convert, they would listen to people and how they approach god, what it is to live the way they live and build resources that profit the community.
NGOs in the contry did way more of a useful and human oriented work than those missionaries. NGOs concentrate on the need of the people and listen to them. Missionaries dont.
Sure it's still up to the people to take it or leave it right? But when you have nothing, and have a "god send" people suddenly building "luxiurious" things or instoring a "wish box" which they explain is a box were you put a piece of paper with a wish in it and God (no one else) will grant you the wish...which often is a simple one as getting tuition money for the kids, medicine for gran pa or a new bicycle to go sell goods in the nearby village...Needless to say those wich are granted by the missionaries who then black mail the population to abandon their hindu gods and pray for salvation in Church to get even bigger wish granted...I cannot accept those practice as they abuse the credulity of people who have nothing in life. Plus all those misionnary project rarely make the people independant and they need to stay and keep an eye on how the faith of the people is doing.
A NGO can leave after a few years knowing they empowered people to take action for a better living.
