What is sin?

Someone posted in another thread about sin, and it triggered this question:  What do you think sin is?  What do you do about it?

I'm looking forward to a great interchange of ideas!

Can what we are able to learn by ourselves be greater than what God gives us?

Yes, quite simply.

I didn't say anything about what you believe, I was just stating what I think sin is. The question is "what is sin?" so I gave my answer. I wasn't trying to give you a lesson. I didn't know that this was a debate. Christians believe that the Bible and its teaching are God's word, we also believe that we're able to have a relationship with God, which involves communication and interaction. We look to each other to confirm what we "hear" or what we came to learn from God through personal revealations and the Bible. What I'm trying to say is that we don't think WE have all the answers, we rely on God to give us answers. What we believe isn't our own opinion, it is what we believe to be from God. I don't think that God should be speculated. We don't form our own opinions about Him. When we need answers we pray to God to reveal them to us, we don't start guessing what it is.

Again, I'm not trying to argue with you, I'm just explaining why we aren't open to what other people think. How can we be open to contradicting ideas when we believe that ours come from God?

Then be happy in your belief, but remember that the terrorists who are killing innocents around the world also believe that their belief is God-given.

Again, I wasn't attacking your belief, I had some questions about it, but I wasn't attacking you. I would never be convinced of what you believe sin is, but I wouldn't try to persuade you into believing the Christian concept of sin. I was simply telling you what I believe. You seem to be the one offended by MY belief.

There is little you could say that would "make me feel" personally attacked.

I'm offending people because I wholeheartedly believe in my God and I obey His teachings? If I didn't treat Jesus' words (as in the Bible) as absolute then I couldn't call myself Christian. What you mean is you have a problem with Christians?

But you're not happy when I talk about it.

I'm not "Self"-righteous, I'm "God"-righteous.

What you're really saying is that Christianity is wrong (you expressed that in your post suggesting me read "Why Christianity must change or die", because Christians treat God's words as absolute. God, to me, isn't subjective. God is what God says he is, not what people say He is.

I know you don't agree, but I hope you can see that if we call ourselves Christians, we can't act any other way. Tolerance is understanding someone's perspective and accepting it whether or not you agree.

I can't say that I'm happy for you, because I don't think your paths are the right paths, but I understand and I accept.

I am Wiccan. I also sometimes find statements of belief where there are no polite "ownership" words like "In my beliefs..." or "In my religion..." are statements that can come across slightly offensive because the implication, without the qualifiers above, makes it sound like a devaluation of others' beliefs as lower or less valid, than one's own faith. That is disrespectful and rude. On this board, or any board, I always try to "own" my beliefs, as a polite acknowledgment, that my belief system is only one of many represented on this board. it's a way of showing respect for others, who believe differently. It has nothing to do with my intense and deep devotion to my Goddess and God or my belief in the absolute truth of the path I follow -- FOR ME. I freely acknowledge my path is not for everyone, and respect that others live their own destiny and purpose. It does, however, have everything to do with respecting other people who post here, and their beliefs that differ from my own.

I don't think you meant to come across that way, personally. I'm just trying to explain how things can sometimes be viewed, without our specific intention, when posting in this venue of just words, no facial expressions, voice or body language to help communication. :P

I hope that my explanation helps.
