QotW- 10/16-Have you ever fasted?

Poppy (libelulle) inspired this question of the week by her response to last week's QOTW.  She is fasting for Ramadan.

Have you ever fasted? For spiritual reasons?  Health reasons?  Dieting?

How long did you fast?  What did you allow yourself to eat/drink?

Let us know what happened to you while you were fasting and what kind of experience it was for you.  Would you do it again?

I fasted only one day, for spiritual reason, I wanted to see what it was like not to eat for a day and concentrate on meditation. I did drink only water during the day because not drinking enough in a tropical area can mean trouble and I'm prone to UTI.

Concentrating on my meditation was tough, but at the end of the day I felt kind of good inside : Like I pushed my body to fish in it's own resources, and once dinner time came and the time to break my fast I was not even that hungry anymore and ate just 2-3 slices of bread a glass of juice and a fruit.

I think I should fast more often, but never found the motivation to do it again. Sometimes I do what some indians call a "Fruit fast" where you eat only fruits and row vegetables if you feel a pang in your stomach, but this one is mostly for health reason, I do it when I feel like purifying my body :)

I've only done it in the past, when I was a practicing Catholic. You had to fast, when I was young, from the night before. No juice, coffee, etc. No meal until after you received Communion. Later it was changed to just a short fast for an hour before Mass.

Other than that, no, nothing formal or planned.

My grandfather fasts every Friday. He has since forever. He's a SB deacon--and the good kind, if there is any. It's for spiritual and health reasons. The older I get, the more I realize what a health nut he is and how lucky I am to have my grandmother to balance him out!!

My first husband was Jewish (still is... LOL!) and I would fast along with him on occasion.

I actually think it's beneficial when done correctly. As long as it's not a part of a binge-purge thing! You give your body a chance to rest, repair and reset. Not so bad, huh??

I try to fast the first Sunday of the month for two meals (usually breakfast and lunch) as part of my religious beliefs. I actually do it as a 24-hour thing, starting after dinner on Saturday night. I abstain from both food and drink, and begin and end each fast with a prayer, usually for help in something or for guidance. The money we would have used for those two meals will go to a fund to help the needy.

That's a really nice way to add deeper meaning to your sacrifice. Thanks for posting.
