Whadya think? As we move to a more global society, will we move towards a global religion as well? Would this be a good or bad thing??
How do you view the thought of one religion? Do you think it will be a place where you can worship as you please; or, do you feel like if it were to happen, you would be forced to abandon your path and made to follow another? Do you feel like it would take away your rights in any way??

I don't believe there is a single religion on the entire planet that is truer than any other, so no, I don't like the idea of a single religion for the world. Our world is diverse, just like cultures and societies. No matter how technology puts us all in each others' faces, so to speak. I like individuality. Not sameness. I also believe our spirits are called by different gods/goddesses for a reason. That none of the religions have the whole truth. Every one has bits, but not the whole. Like a tapestry, all the different strands make up the whole.
In terms of personal freedoms and rights, I think it would be a disaster. I don't think the human species is evolved enough not to make it a forced thing, on all others. Look at the Middle East theocracies of today. Look at Christianity of the past. Look how people want to force everyone to believe the same, feel the entitlement to judge others' beliefs and discriminate against them. No thanks. Like the old saying, "Absolute power corrupts absolutely. " This includes religions as well as gov'ts.

Actually, rather than moving toward one religion, I see our world moving away from religion completely.
"More and more people are studying many spiritual paths, and taking the parts from each that work for them."
I know a lot of people, too, that have done so, IRL as well as on-line, or at least, are in the throes of doing so. I also hear strident voices in our politics here in the U.S., of those screaming their god is the only one and trying to control our gov't. Scary. So, I hope what you see is more prevalent, myself. <:O

On that note, dontcha think that as so many of us do the same thing, that there is a church that will come together to celebrate just this thing??
I guess I see so many people migrating in this direction, you'd think we'd all be able to freely worship together :-) I guess, on this point, I have too much faith in humanity!
Isn't a coming together of different faiths what UU is all about? Do you feel that they do it the right way?
When I was growing up SBC, the church leadership was so scared of this! And religious tolerance conventions, etc... They were 'evil'!
I think we are a very long way from a global society, and will never evolve to one religion unless we all become enlightened in generations to come.

No, I don't think so, not in the way I understood your OP. It's not about becoming sameness, everybody believing the exact same thing, which is what becoming a SINGLE RELIGION means to me. The UU I attend is a way for many beliefs to come together in sacred space to be inspired, inspire each other, but definitely NOT a place for everyone to believe all the same thing, worship the same deities, etc. It's a friendly space for all of us who follow non-mainstream beliefs/philosophies, also. Atheists. Gnostics. Pagans. Liberal Jews. Liberal Christians. Etc.
Plus the Pagan Circle for this UU is a separate group, and we do formal Sabbats apart from the church. The church goes into no major details of ANY religion at all, deliberately, but acknowledges major celebrations in all religions in some way, but not as a total service, or focusing more on one religious background than another. They are very careful about NOT doing so.

All that being said, I have observed that the farther along on any spiritual path one goes, the more they seem to come together in beliefs. The most evolved Buddhist, Christian, New Thought, Hindu, etc. start sounding very much alike- Love each other, be kind. Have Peace, don't worry. So as we evolve through many more lifetimes, probably the religions will sound more alike, and then eventually disappear.
I think you are coming from a very good pov wanting unity.
This is my thought: one religion does not mean the loss of identity of all others, unless....the message becomes one as nikki940 says
IMO, if there ever is one church for the world it will be a lot like UU.

No, I really don't.
