National day of thanks
| Sun, 11-19-2006 - 10:07am |
Thanksgiving Day in the US is a national holiday set aside for gathering with family and friends for fellowship and to give thanks. For those of you outside the US, is there such a day anytime during the year?
Thanksgiving isn't a religious holiday, and sometimes I wonder if it's just an official way to kick off Christmas commercialism, but folks seem to begin to warm their hearts and share their good fortune with the poor and hungry more now than at any other time of year. Too bad it only lasts 6 weeks!
So what will you do to give thanks? What are you most thankful for this year?

The story of this rescued whale is a lesson to us all about giving thanks for our blessings.

I have a great deal to be thankful for in my life, but I have gotten some very good lessons on thankfulness from those who do not appear on the face of it to have much to be thankful for.
I have a friend with cerebral palsy and mild mental disability. Life has always been hard for him and he always has struggled to walk with the aid of braces and crutches. His speech is affected and many people do not take the time to really listen to him. Over the past few years his health has failed, he began falling frequently and he is now living in a nursing home for his own safety. As I sat talking to him one day recently he floored me by saying "You know, Becky, I have been truly blessed!"
Another person is a woman who comes to the free lunch program at our church. While she is not homeless as many of our friends there are, she certainly has very little in the way of material possessions. She is confined to a wheel chair and uses oxygen constantly. But she says "I give thanks to the Good Lord every day for what I have!"
I am thankful for my health and I am most thankful for my friends and family.

There is no such thing both in Switzerland where I grew up and in Idnia where I live. But I think we should all spare a day in our busy year to remember to thank people around us.
I'm thankful to my parents and in-laws for bearing with the wedding palnning and stress involved. I'm Thankful to DH for standing by me. And I'm thankful to god for the life I'm living and the fact I'm alive

I keep an attitude of gratitude every day of the
year, but the Thanksgiving holiday is great, with
the entire clan gathering at my daughter's house.
The girls will do all the cooking, as usual. Yay!!
Hugs,
