What do you want?

What do you want? How many times have you been asked that question or asked it to someone else?
I'm sure you realize we aren't talking about a red Porsche here... though that would be a nice bonus. Or financial freedom, a good job, etc.
What is it you really want out of life? What's your highest dream for yourself? How do you want to evolve?

I want to discover my purpose for being. At 54, I feel like I haven't yet discovered that and it is my spiritual quest...
And speaking of my quest, I had the most wonderful experience yesterday... I happened to notice a book I had bought at Half-Price Books about 5 or 6 years ago while browsing for a book on another topic. I remember at the time thinking that it looked like a book that might be interesting to read "someday" when I had time... and someday was yesterday! It's a big illustrated softcover book called "Yoga For Your Spiritual Muscles" by Rachel Schaeffer. Right in the beginning it grabbed me with a paragraph about common misconceptions about Yoga, one of which is that it is some kind of cult. It read, "Yoga is the opposite (of a cult). It reminds you that "everything you need to know is inside of you and brings you closer to who you are." It's a combination of Yoga poses explained and pictured along with inspirational stories and related thoughts on each topic.
I was drawn to the chapter on 'Balance' because it had a special segment on 'Balance Your Workday & Build Productivity', which sounded similar to a workshop I developed several years ago while working for Communities In Schools called 'Lifeskills - Finding A Balance". It touched on the importance of having both yin and yang in all areas of life. It also mentioned Hippocrates, and his belief that all 4 bodily fluids - blood, phlegm, yellow bile & black bile - must be in balance for health to exist. Not a pretty picture to visualize, but it makes 'perfect' sense to me.
This book also suggests keeping a journal for thoughts and pictures that may come up during or immediately following Yoga practice. It went on to suggest playing pleasing music during Yoga practice, so, even though I was only reading about Yoga, I put on Linda Ronstadt's "This Is Dedicated To The One I Love" CD as background music while I was reading. It's one of the most calming, relaxing CD's I've ever heard, and I felt compelled to journal the insights I was having as I was reading and listening. Ahhh... a few moments of perfect peace... I knew then I had found the right book at the right time of my life.
So, this is part of my spiritual quest. I've gone to a few different Yoga classes over the years but never kept it up due to being too busy, too expensive, yada, yada, yada... The best one I attended was taught by a woman in her 60s or 70s who was fit as a fiddle and had that wonderful look of total well-being and health shining through her eyes. She offered life insights along with demonstrating and helping us with poses and it was wonderful. She taught a morning class but I had a work conflict and couldn't figure out a way to continue beyond the first class at the time. BUT the memory of it is like a beacon I'm drawn toward. There is a woman who teaches Yoga at our local Sr. Citizens Center and I may check that out. Wouldn't it be wonderful if her class turned out to be my best ever yoga experience?
Is there an ivillage message board specifically for Yoga? I've done a search but haven't come up with one yet. Perhaps sharing my quest and discoveries with others IS my purpose, and so finally I am on the right path. Blessings to all.
Wow... thanks for sharing that!
Yes there is a Yoga board at iVillage, it is on the "Diet & Fitness" channel. Just click on it above then go to message boards, it is near the bottom. I go there myself as I just started doing yoga.
Good luck on your path,
