karma or karmic debts?

Do you believe in karma or karmic debts? Say if you seriously mistreat somebody in this life, do you have to somehow pay for it in the next life?
How do you know if you have a karmic debt to pay? And how do you go about collecting or paying on a debt if you don't know that you have one? no memories of a past life.. ie..
Just curious as to what ya'll think?

I do believe there's some form of karma, but I admit my ideas are pretty vague.
I don't think that we "pay" for sins or wrongs that we committed in any past life in THIS life...
I DO think our present attitudes can affect the old "what goes around, comes around" mantra though. I have a friend who is one of the kindest, most giving people I've ever known - but she is constantly struggling with what you might consider extremely "bad luck". She's been in terrible, abusive relationships; she's had awful luck with roommates; nightmare jobs; constant mechanical problems with vehicles; a flooded apartment... it's like it was always one thing after another with her - like she just attracted bad luck. But I almost think it was her attitude - she had this sweet naivety that literally just told people that she was the type who can be walked all over, and over time she just sort of treated herself as this victim of horrible luck and didn't even try to recognize bad situations or people (skeezy landlords or slimy used-car salesmen, for example).
On the other extreme, I knew a girl once who was also very kind and giving, but she was confident and always had a positive attitude about everything. I swear that girl had a golden horseshoe up her butt because she was always winning little contests, getting great job offers, always making friends wherever she went. And you couldn't even be jealous of her because she was just so genuine in her friendliness and positive outlook!
Bottom line, if you have a negative attitude, you will lead a negative life... and vice versa. That's my belief.

golden horseshoe up her butt... LMAO!!
Here is my take on it.
Please keep in mind, there are many, many interpretations of Karma and Reincarnation. What I believe has come from study and also personal insight and revelation, as I have lived my path with my Goddess and God, and what I have learned from Them so far. So others who believe in Karma and Reincarnation, may have different beliefs of these two concepts and how they work in their lives.
For me, Karma is a re-balancing of what we put out of balance by our thoughts and actions. Sometimes the opportunity comes in the same lifetime, sometimes not. We just need to remain awake to recognize opportunities when they come to us, to act differently, make different choices, or to understand. Karma is not "punishment" per se. It's the natural consequence of our actions, because all actions create a reaction at some point, whether positive or negative.
I believe we have unending time to learn and evolve and "get it." The Goddess and God, in my beliefs, are always sending me teachers in the form of people, animals, Nature, experiences. They never lose patience. They never stop teaching. When I awake enough to understand, then I "get" the lesson, and can move on to another lesson to learn to help me evolve. It's a very individualized process, IMO. There is no schedule or maximum incarnations that I am allowed, in other words. Karma happens when it happens, it could be in this lifetime, but with different people, even, and an opportunity to handle something by choosing a more positive act, or changing our thought patterns, and thus the energy we send out and attract to us. It could be with the same person. It could be in another lifetime, where we are different, in different bodies, as different genders, in different roles we are in with people, other spirits we have worked with in past lifetimes, with whom we have some Karmic "work" to do, or to help them do their "work."
I think not knowing who we were in past lifetimes is actually a blessing. If we had all that conscious memory, we would be boggled in our minds, LOL! :D I think that as Spirit, before we reincarnate, we decide what we will "work on" in the next lifetime, and other Spirits agree to be co-participants to help us learn and/or rebalance our Karma. Through intuition, personal insight, if we are open and ready, we recognize the opportunity to work on these lessons, when the opportunity presents itself. Sometimes there is deja vu, or just an inner voice that guides us. As we evolve in each lifetime, we use tools that help us go within for guidance, such as meditation, Yoga, t'ai chi, etc.
Part of my learning about Karma & Reincarnation came from my years spent as a Zen Buddhist, and studying at a local Zendo and learning sitting meditation there. Here is a web site that has some information, from a Buddhist perspective:

THANKS EVER soooo much for the link. Haven't been around a lot for a long, long time, but today I did, and found this buddha link!
I also quite agree with your explanation of Karma! This is also what I have found, when trying to find the meaning of Karma.

Welcome back!
Hi everybody,
how kind of you, to say 'hello' to me! I don't know what it is with me, but for the longest time, I am going through this mood of being boored or getting terribly involved about matters.
I went through some things, like the Ho'oponopono with Reiki and it worked great, then somehow, it brought me to what is generally known as the Huna believe system in Hawaii and it too is working well for me.
At least, I feel more and more empowered, to be able to deal with personal problems, but also perhaps to be able to help my sons in their lives, without being interfering? if you know what I mean?
My youngest is battling a very very rare liver disease and because of my first marriage being terribly abusive, my other son is also damaged in his feelings and emotions. I hope that I can help them both, yet not interfere in their personal lives and I must say, that my other son, does contact me, often and asks met to do Reiki or "that other thing you do" as he puts it. It must help him, otherwise, he wouldn't ask me, don't you think?
Anyway, I don't push my believe systems on my sons, but I do help in a quiet way.
There are also others, whom I have gotten to know via internet and they are living with terrible bodily pains. So have bene trying to look around for something which could break through their blockages and help to heal them. Mentally, emotionally and physically.
And myself as well, as my knee is getting worse and worse in pains. It is helping, the Reiki and the other praying way. Eventually I hope to be as healthy again, as I was, when I was a spring chicken. I do look toward, the 98% of health which I enjoy and not the 2% of pain and trouble in my health or live.
Wishing you all a belated: happy and blessed New year! greets from brush
I don't think karma or karmic debt is as simple or as easily understood as we would like.
