from Beliefnet: What do you want done with your body after you die?

  • I haven't thought about it, and I'm not starting now.
  • I want to be buried in the ground.
  • I want to be cremated, my ashes scattered in places I love.
  • I want to be cremated and my ashes preserved.
  • I really don't care.
  • I have left instructions in my will.
  • I'll leave it up to my survivors/family.
  • Other (please explain your choice)

You will be able to change your vote.

I added a few choices to the list on Beliefnet, but if you want to go there to see the results of the poll as others have taken it, here is the web site: http://www.beliefnet.com/

I picked "I want to be cremated, my ashes scattered in places I love." I want to be cremated and my ashes spread in the mountains, the Sierras. My husband isn't happy about that, though. :P He wants in the ground, grave, in a cemetary, the whole enchilada kind of thing. I think of my body as a shell in this incarnation. Once I'm dead, there is nothing of me in this shell. Also, I want to go back to the Earth, and have my ashes scattered in a place I found my spiritual "home," the mountains. It feels right to me.

We did this with one of my beloved dog's ashes, and sprinkled them along his favorite walk off leash along the bay. Every time I walk there, I feel his joyful presence, not because his spirit is really there, but because MY love and memories are with me always. And also, because his spirit has visited me in my home and I have sensed his presence. Especially right after he died. I told my DD (who doesn't like me to talk about such things) that it doesn't matter about my body. And I don't want "pilgrimages" to where I'm buried or where my ashes are scattered. It really just doesn't matter. If she goes within, to her heart & spirit, I will be there. :)

I want to be cremated, but I really don't much care what's done with the ashes.

Definitely, I want to be cremated, and shortly after death.

This probably sounds nuts, but I might want to be made into a LifeGem- http://www.lifegem.com/

For a more "traditional" thought- I guess I could see being cremated and then having my ashes scattered someplace that I really liked. If family members wanted me buried, I really wouldn't care though. It's not all that big of a decision to me. Ideally, I'd want something "different", or maybe to be burned on an old fashioned funeral pyre and strewn with herbs, but I don't think that's legal, lol... so I guess the other options might be valid. Aside from the "different" factor, I really don't care what happens to me after my last breath.

Wow, ok that's weird (the gem thing) ... kinda creepy to me.

BTW the funeral pyre is against the law ... that's what my dad wanted done so I looked into it. I suppose I could take it to court, freedom of religion and all but he seems to be ok with us not being allowed so I'll let it go. Now he's thinking of donating his body to science. Ewww!

I voted other because I just haven't decided yet. I hope I don't have to worry about it for a long LONG time. :)

Is it a federal law against it, or is it a state by state thing?

Yeah, I thought the funeral pyre thing would be against the law. Oh well... I might consider donating my body to science. I mean, what on earth (or off it, lol) am I going to do with it once I'm dead? They could have a field day with my brain, I'm sure, lol....

I think state by state but I'm not sure.

My brother would appreciate it ... his favorite class so far was working with donated corpses. :P
