Ruminative thinking extreme

Hello,

Within the past couple of months I have been constantly linking something that happened years ago to today. A major event happened about ten years ago, and recently I keep linking that one event to anything that resembles it. For example, if I witnessed a dog being hit by a car, anytime I see a dog now I think that it is going to get hurt. How do I stop thinking like this? It is driving me crazy and scares me.

I wish I had the answer but I can relate to what you're saying.

I live in a small town very close to a larger city that we have to drive to and through quite often.

Are you aware of what triggered this two months ago?

Thank you very much for those links; they were helpful. I am seeing a counsellor, but I don't feel comfortable enough sharing the recurring thoughts I have with her. I may try to read one of the suggested books from the website.

I think it's something we all do, but not to "extreme".
