A quick update on my student.

Okay, I chaperoned at an event for one of my daughter's classes and the middle school counselor was there, too. It was a team building, as well as a anti-drug & -sex event put on my the local national guard. The first 'game' they played one of the speakers talked about helping your buddy who may be in trouble, blah, blah, blah. SO, I took that opportunity to go over and talk to the counselor about "Lyle". Very tough and uncomfortable. After he told me that his grandmother gave him some info about NOT going to the free counseling here on base b/c it could cause them to leave the island there is seemingly no where for him to turn. The counselor also gave me a hard talking to saying that if any child starts to talk to me about critical info such as the self-injury, or suicide, I am to tell that child to stop talking to me immediately. I guess I never realized how hard this sort of thing could be. I did however, talk to "Lyle" gave him the 1-800-SUICIDE hotline as well as www.teenhelp.org and www.yellowribbon.org to seek help if he needs it. I've also decided to just open up a little bit and offer him an adult to talk to. I've invited him to go to church w/ my daughter and me on Sunday but so far his grandmother is against it, but I told him that I would see what time would be convenient this weekend and just have him over to play DDR or watch a movie. One of my daughter's friends is spending the w-end w/ us since her folks are stateside for a week and they all know each other. He doesn't have many friends and I notice that the more positive attention he gets the more calm he is in general. I'm keeping it on a very even keel so the lines don't get crossed as far as our relationship goes as well. When he crosses a line (which doesn't really happen) I remind him that we still have a level of respect we have to maintain. He is very good about that but I am cautious to make sure no one can question anything - never met the grandparents but I am a bit indimidated simply based on what I've heard.

Still keeping my fingers crossed and head up. Keep prayers in mind for me and "Lyle".
