Thanks to Yankee Magazine, here's some news that you can use:)
Buttercups nodded and said, "Goodbye!"
Clover and daisy went off together,
But the fragrant water lilies lie
Yet moored in the golden August weather.
-Celia Thaxter (1835-1894)
Perseids
There is something magical about a point of light suddenly streaking across the starry field of the night sky. Those shooting stars are actually not stars at all but meteors, and August promises to be a good month for viewing them. Of the major meteor showers that return to our skies at the same time each year, the Perseid shower puts on the brightest dependable show on the night of August 11-12. Make sure that you check the sky often after dark. The very best viewing will be after midnight.
Calendar
St. Lawrence's Day (August 10)
When told by Roman officials to surrender the church's valuables, St. Lawrence brought the city's poor and sick. "Here is the church's treasure," he said. Rome didn't find this amusing, and legend says that he was put to death in A.D. 258 by being roasted on a grate, although some scholars say he was more likely beheaded. In either case, folks in southern Europe still mark this day. It is customary there to eat only cold meat in recognition of the reputed manner of his death. Fair weather on St. Lawrence's Day presages a fair autumn.
Dog Days End (August 11)
The dog days (the hottest and most unhealthy days of the year) end today. This period is traditionally the 40 days beginning July 3 and ending August 11.
Weather Lore
Observe on what day in August the first heavy fog occurs, and expect a hard frost on the same day in October.
If the first week in August is unusually warm, the winter will be white and long.
If corn husks are thicker than usual, a cold winter lies ahead.
If corn blades twist up, it will rain.
