Roll call- Who are you?

First, what's your name (or what part of your username you want to be addressed as)?

How long have you been veggie, and what type are you?

Who are the important people in your life? Who are your furred, feathered, or scaled loved ones?

What do you spend most of your day doing, and what do you do regularly (more than once a week) that makes you feel the most alive (the thing that feels like what you were meant to do)?

I am Jaseann, a vegetarian (dairy and some eggs) for almost 9 years. I live with my wonderful parents. Mom was a speech pathologist for stroke patients before a progressive condition disabled her (later a stroke took away some of her speech and she was working with a speech path!) and Dad is a professor of Chemistry. I have a pair o' keets, Petrarch and Pixie. I cannot understand why people who blanch when they hear that the word budgerigar translates as "pretty good eating" can immediately sit down and eat another bird, but I guess that's understood here!

I do a lot of small activities throughout the day. I cook for my family, I craft (making jewelry, knitting, sewing, sometimes painting, sculpting- lots of things). I plan to make that into a business. I also read a lot. I am happiest when I am creating, whether in craft supplies or food.

What about you?

Hi. I am Heather. Vegetarian for almost 5 years now, and Vegan for probably 2. Three Vegan children, and my husband is also vegan.
I spend my days with my children. I also have an online business that I sell various earth friendly goods. And I sell Arbonne Cosmetics and Skin Care at home parties and out of my home. I also do hair 1 day a week out of my house. (I am a licensed cosmetologist and wanted to keep some of my clients)
I love making stuff. I make handmade Hemp watches. I love sewing clothes for my little girls, and myself. Can't get boys stuff to come out right. I love scrapbooking and just got back into that. I love going for a morning rollerblade with my children in tow. I have a double stroller and a Kiddie Board that my oldest stands on and our dog runs alongside. It's been raining lately so I haven't gotten to do that for a few days now.
I love doing all kinds of stuff, but I guess the one thing that makes me feel happiest is when I am spending quality time with my children and husband. When we are snuggling together, or having flashlight wars in the dark, camping and stuff.

i'm jen, i've been vegan for about 6 years, vegetarian for about 10. i live with my SO and our dog and cat. both adopted from shelters, of course. our dog is a female foxhound mix and she's blind from glaucoma. our cat is a male orange tabby shorthair. my mate is also vegan, but the animals are not.

for a living, i'm a lawyer. i also teach cardio kickboxing once a week and other group fitness classes from time to time. the things i like to do each week are: read books to be discussed with my book club, knit, go on hikes and walks with my mate and our dog,

I started crocheting over the winter, not as difficult as knitting. I can't seem to get knitting down, and even though I think it looks so much nicer I opted for the easier crocheting.
I use a lot of hemp yarn. I like it. Not soft and elegant but sturdy and warm. Husband likes it for his dread tams.

What are your favorites for yarn? I can't stand synthetic stuff. Feels squeaky, if that makes any sense. I found some really great color grown organic cotton that I really like too. Great soft colors. Very natural.

Nice to meet you.

where do you buy the hemp and the organic cotton? i'm making a baby hat and i want to get Pakucho color-grown organic cotton, but i don't know where to get it. i wouldn't mind getting some hemp either.

right now i'm working on my first piece - a scarf made from cheap synthetic yarn (at least it was made in the usa). no point in spending the big bucks on the first effort! i guess i've never been to a real yarn store, but at craft stores like Michael's they definitely don't have the organic cotton or hemp. i'm sure i'll eventually find some good yarn sources.

here's a really great website from a vegan knitter in new zealand - she has a bunch of cool links http://nutmeg.gen.nz/fakesheep/

i'd like to learn to crochet too. knitting is really easy though! or at least casting on and doing a basic knit stitch is - that's all i've done so far!!!

oh, i found the pakucho organic cotton i was looking for! a "yarn store" near my house carries it. i put it in quotes because it appears that the yarn store is a woman selling yarn out of her house. she seems really cool and sounds like she has a variety of non-animal fibers. she's sending me the pakucho and then when i get a chance, i'll stop by and see what else she has.

i'll check out hemptraders.com, thanks. i'm really interested in using sustainable and fair trade fibers as much as possible. did i mention that i'm also going to try to use cut up discarded clothing and see how it works to try to knit with that?

oh, by the way - what's a dread tam? is that like the hat you see people with dreads often wearing?
