Imagine that someone you know has decided to become a vegetarian. You want to give them a gift for encouragement. What books (cookbooks or informational) would you give them? What web addresses would you write down and give them with the books? Are there any groups or individuals you would direct them to look into for more support or advice?

People saying you look healthy doesn't men your symptoms aren't valid. Just because some physician didn't listen doesn't mean it's all in your head. Just because there is no definitive test yet doesn't mean the disease doesn't exist. You know you body- trust yourself!

It's a link from PETA... it's a starter kit for vegetarians... I'd also suggest searching your local supermarket. Many of them have started to sell Boca Burgers, and Morning Star products... and they're really yummy... I suggest Boca's fire grilled burgers!

For next weeks QOTW, I plan to ask you to take your imaginary friend on a trip through the store and tell us what you buy that would be easy and unfrightening for new veggies. This week, I'm interested in resources. The PETA website is a good one, info and motivation.

As to cookbooks, any of the Moosewood cookbooks are classics. But the three I depend on are:

Vegetarian Dinner in Minutes by Linda Gassenheimer. I would especially recommend this for newbys because each thing is a meal- a main dish and side dish. It is hard for most people to figure out how to make meals because suddenly they're making main dishes with the foods that were side dishes. There's even a shopping list for both dishes combined and a list of the order in which to do everything to get the main dish and side dish ready at about the same time (while the recipes are written normally and seperately). And there are chapters for Mediteranean, "modern American", Tex-Mex/Southwestern, Far Eastern, and Cajun/Caribbean foods, so there's something for just about everyone! I love the Greek Pasta with Lemon Vinaigrette Salad and the Fajitas with Refried Beans (even if I buy veggie refried beans to save some work! Nothing has to be made

a great book for getting started (both with recipes and with information) is The Vegan Sourcebook by Jo Stepaniak. her cookbook Vegan Vittles is also a classic. Another cookbook i like, i don't know the name of but it's the PeTA cookbook with Opus the penguin and friends on the cover.

To help understand the reasons to go veg, i'd recommend reading Mad Cowboy by Howard Lyman. Also the Compassion Over Killing website www.COK.net

i like the PeTA website too, and for teens or young people - the PeTA2 website.

to purchase veg products - www.veganstore.com and www.veganessentials.com

for support and to ask questions of real live vegetarians - i recommend the message boards at www.vegsource.com, particularly the grassroots veganism board. and this board of course!
