and it is so cute!  We had an empty cage and have been on the look out for the 'perfect pet' for it and we found it today at petco.  She/he is a white parakeet with grey spots and hints of blue to its feathers.  It is pretty skittish and scared still, we are just letting it get used to its new home for now, after that we will start spending a lot of time with it and letting it out of its cage.  Here are some photos~

Reminds me a bit of my beloved Petrarch about ten years ago- I still adore him of course but I've gotta look at the "children" every time we're in the pet store!

It is important to let him/her (let us know if the cere- over the beak- is pink or blue- though they do start out pink/brown. If it's blue, it's a boy! Isn't that easy to remember! My blue one with a white head

one more thing that I thought of...it looked to me like the bird that passed on had not eated a lot of its food.

I'm so sorry- and glad that you are able to try again!

Years ago- must be 9 because it was after Petrarch and before Pixie, there was Quill the canary. One night I took his water out, refilled the container, and found him dead on the floor when I returned. We'd only had him a short while- maybe two months- and I'd saved for quite a while to be able to buy him (I was 16 or so then). It was quite a shock. I know there's such a thing as "night frights"- they just get scared, can't see, and have heart attacks or fall. (I think you said it happened overnight? I'm responding to your other message so can't see what you wrote). If you cover the cage (I cover both of mine but I understand the jury is out) I've heard a nightlight can help- the cover keeps it dark enough for the bird to sleep but it can see where the perches, etc, are. Especially good for a new birdy.

Nervous birds don't eat much. Your new one must be feeling pretty calm, which is great! I'm not sure Pixie, who I think must not know she's adopted and so thought she could inherit Dad's worry habit and my (mostly past-tense) anxiety disorders, could handle all of that even today! I get her out and things are fine as long as no one new stomps in (that'd be Dad of course) or I don't have a muscle spasm or anything. She'll sit on my finger and listen to me talk but she does get scared easily! I can't say what happened to your first bird. There are so many things, from falls, to fear, to illnesses, to defects that we can't see. I can tell you that after poor Quill I got Pixie, whom I love dearly in spite and because of her neuroses. Petrarch managed to break his wing when he was a baby and can't fly (which may be one reason he's so tame- he can't fly away!) but the most excitement I've had with them (of the negative kind) was when Pixie manages to get under Mom and Dad's queen-sized bed (with a dozen shoes, a box of giftwrap, an autoharp, and who knows what else under it) or behind the couch and decides to walk away from any hand she sees! (for some reason the bedroom door's been closed when she gets out recently)

Oh, baby bird's ceres are brown/pink. They turn blue when they hit their "teens", so to speak. The black stripes over the top of the head also are gone by then, leaving ones around the neck
