Hi everyone ..
I am looking for some resources (books or web pages) for vegetarianism and a family. I have a 3 yr old and want him to have a healthy balanced diet. I was a veg for 3 years prior to my pregnancy mid way through I started eating meat again. I have felt like crap ever since!!!! A few months ago I started taking meat out of my diet again but kept in in my sons and DH's. I cannot control what DH eats but I can what my son and I do!!! DH is not to hard to please he eats whatever I make so I am not too worried about him. I just want to do it right and esp with a young child. Any info would be great !!!
Thanks
Ann

you'll get some good websites here...but i would also highly recommend talking to your son's pedatrician about it. (unles the doc is somehow overly misinformed about vegetarian diets). get whatever pamphlets from them that you can.

just remember that children have different dietary needs then adults do, they need more fat and lots of iron and protein and calcium. so whatever yu give them, you need to make sure you're meeting their caloric needs, since a vegetarian diet tends to be low in fat etc...

in any case, i work with my dd's ped. for her diet...that way they know what your child is an isn't eating and in the case of a problem with the diet can they recommend what to do.

Hi, Ann!

I don't have kids, but I know that there is good information out there. And that it is fully possible for veggies and carnivores to share a table- for almost two years I've made a vegetarian main course that Dad sometimes supplements with a microwavable or quick meat dish. It was hard on Dad at first- though we had gradually been eating more and more vegetarian dishes from '99 (when I moved back home after being away for a year) until Mom had to stop cooking in late '03 and I took over. But we have a good balance now.

Working with your pediatrician, or even having a meeting with a nutritionist if your doc doesn't know enough to help you, is a good idea. But kids can even be healthy on a vegan diet if it's well planned and the fat and protien are carefully monitered. There is monitering needed on a vegetarian diet (and on a "normal" one, don't think I'm criticising the vegan diet)
