Munchies and not feeling full

I'm going on about 2 months of being vegetarian, almost vegan tho sometimes out of necessity I eat a little eggs & cowsmilk (usually in preprosessed foods). I'm having the biggest problems with feeling full enough and wanting to constantly snack because I don't feel full.

I'm a 4'11" small boned 27yr old female who's pretty sedentary. I'd liked to do more but I'm still waiting to have insurance again and be able to get a breat reduction, which will greatly increase my mobility. I'm probably carrying a few more lbs than I should, so the munchies and not feeling full really worry me. My family is living on one income so our budget's already stretched as tight as it can be, without me looking at any special veggie foods (like meat analogs). I've been relying too much on potatoes & rice and would like to fix that as well but I'm not sure how. thanks

One thing you can do is add more complex carbs, like whole grains. They are good for you and don't have to be from the fancy health food items. Things like brown rice, bulgar, and so forth can be bought cheaply and in bulk in many places.

Legumes are good, and important. We have a soup that we all love that is made from dried beans- we get bags of all sorts of beans, mix them together, and divide into containers with the amount we use for one pot. Add some herbs and a veggie bullion cube, let it simmer for a few hours (we don't have to be in the room, even) and we have a cheap and delicious meal. I also take a can of chickpeas (aka garbonzo beans) and mash it up (in the food processor or by hand) with 3 T of lemon juice, some garlic powder and cumin annd cayenne or chili powder, and enough reserved bean liquid to make it stick together. I use this hummus as a sandwich filling, on crackers, whatever. It makes me enough for about 4 sandwiches, for not much money. I make tacos by mixing canned kidney beans with taco seasoning or even just the spices in them, chopping a tomato and tearing up some lettuce, and putting it in taco shells.

Rice and potatoes are digested pretty quickly. But if you add some more complex things to the meal- the beans, for instance, and make some changes like using brown rice (which is better for you anyway) you can make things last. Adding some fat, like a touch of a healthy oil or some nuts, will also help. Experts suggest having some protien and even some healthy fat at each meal for just this reason.

Meanwhile, if you're snacking on healthy and cheap foods, it can actually be good for you- keep your blood sugar balanced and your energy up. It's all a matter of balance.

Finally, from one 4'11", small framed 27 year old to another, welcome, good luck, and let us know if you have any more questions!

k trying this again as my internet just glitched :(

I'm trying to finish out a bag of white rice, then I plan to improve my varities after that. Thanks for the hummus recipe. I really need to try that since commercially prepared hummus is always too intense for me.

Do you ever buy nuts in bulk? those containers at the grocery store always look soooo expensive to me. I'm just been waiting to afford cashews so I can make the vegan ice cream recipe I got from a cooking class I took.

Thanks for the welcome :D

My favourite afternoon snack is homemade trail mix.
I get the stuff for it in the bulk section of my supermarket. I look at what's reasonably priced and go from there.
Lately it's been walnut halves, shelled pistachios, pepitas, raisins, sunflower seeds, dried apricot halves, figs, dates, almonds, dried cranberries.
I get about 1 cup of all of these and mix it all into one big container and keep it in the fridge. It lasts for a long long time!!!! I portion put about 1/2 a cup into a sandwich bag and BF and I take that to work to munch on in the afternoon. It keeps us full and is so delicious!
In the morning I prefer to eat a banana or two if I'm hungry.

My sister sometimes eats the salad-in-a-bag that you can buy in the store, as a snack ...she says it gives her that "chewing satisfaction" that she is craving in the afternoon.
