HI there,
I have a slightly embarrasing question. To be supportive of me, my husband has just started to eat vegetraian too. I've noticed he's become a big gas ball. He's confused and I think embarrased by the amount of gas he has all of a sudden. Does anyone know why this happens and any helpful info? I have been a vegetarian for so long I don't remember having this effect when I switched so I'm not much comfort to him when I say I "think" this will go away.
thanks so much.

Nothing horrible or atypical. He always ate veggie at home cause of me Now he does it out too so veggie burgers, tomato/basil sandwhiches, veggie tacos, stuff like that. He has to grab thingsa for lunch while he's out.

It could very well be what his diet is consisting of. I honestly don't think that it's because he's a new vegetarian. Beans are the notorious causes of gas. Since your DH is eatting veggie burgers, they are made out of soy. So that could very well be where it's coming from. Some people are unable to digest the natural carbs found in beans, so that causes gas as well as constipation.

Here are other foods that can cause gas.

Legumes: Especially dried beans and peas, baked beans, soy beans, lima beans

Milk Products: Milk, ice cream, cheese

Vegetables: Cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, cucumbers, sauerkraut, kohlrabi, asparagus

Root Vegetables: Potatoes, rutabaga, turnips, radishes, onions

Fruits: Prunes, apricots, apples, raisins, bananas

Cereals & Breads: Cereals, breads, pastries, and all foods containing wheat and wheat products. Check labels

Fatty Foods: Pan-fried or deep-fried foods, fatty meats, rich cream sauces and gravies, pastries, and any high-fat food. Check labels.

Liquids: Carbonated beverages, fizzy medicine

After looking on the internet about this I found out that vegetarians produce more gas than meat eaters because the intestinal enzymes cannot digest the cellulose in the vegetables cell walls

I've been a veg*n for about 6 years now and I can honestly say that I do pass gas more than other people.

thanks so much for the info I will forward your email to him. I think we'll have to adjust his diet a bit. I guess after thinking about it you're right I think I too am a bit more gaseous than my other friends. Oh well I'll take that over the meat eating lifestyle.
By the way your Hunter is beautiful.

Happy weekend.

I'm pretty gassy but sometimes if I eat certain things like cabbage, or beans and onions or soy products I get stinky gassy !LOL!
I think it varies with everyone. I tried Beano and it didn't really help me.
A good friend of mine can't eat nuts of any kind without getting super stinky gas!! it's disgusting!LOL!
I have another friend who gets gassy from too many fatty things like cream and ice cream and cheeses.
I think I read somewhere that It's normal to produce about 2 quarts of gas per day :)
Sometimes if I eat a lot of different foods at one time then I get painful bloating and gassiness too so I try to avoid doing that unless I will be alone for a day or two ;)

I haven't really paid attention to what gives me stinky gas lol. I do know that I get a lot from stir fry. Which I love, so I deal with having gas. I don't go out much anyways, so I don't have to have hear/smell me all that much.

When I was looking up this whole gas issue, I too read that we produce up to 2 quarts of gas per day. I think that's rather interesting.
