1- Have you made any new-to-you vegetarian dishes this week? Was it good or bad?

2- How many vegetarian cookbooks do you have? Which one(s) do you recommend?

3- Are the first or only vegetarian in your family?

4- When it comes to eating at a restaurant, how concerned are you about any animal products in the food? Do you question exactly what's in the food? How do waiters tend to behave towards any food questions that you have?

5- Organic or non-organic veggies & fruit... does it matter to you? Why or why not?

1- Have you made any new-to-you vegetarian dishes this week? Was it good or bad?

DH does most of the cooking. Nothing new this week but recently he did make vegetarian stuffed peppers-stuufed with veggie meat and mushroom soup on top> I loved it. I don't even like whole mushrooms, but I liked the soup.

2- How many vegetarian cookbooks do you have? Which one(s) do you recommend?

We have six. My favorite is The Macrobiotic Brown Rice cookbook by Craig Sams

3- Are the first or only vegetarian in your family?

As far as I know I'm the only one on my side. DH has a vegetarian cousin. My parents like tofu and tempeh though, and always have it in the house anyway-so visiting isnt a problem

4- When it comes to eating at a restaurant, how concerned are you about any animal products in the food? Do you question exactly what's in the food? How do waiters tend to behave towards any food questions that you have?

I have questioned at bakerys and fast food places if things were cooken in animal lard or vegetable oil

5- Organic or non-organic veggies & fruit... does it matter to you? Why or why not?

I buy organic as much as I can afford to. We have organic bananas and cantelope for the boys lunches right now

OO cheesy vegan casserole sounds good. I need to start trying more veggie casseroles, see if I can get more past my dh lol. It's hard that he can't stand any green veggies except for peppers & onions tho

"Vegan family favorites"... sounds interesting, have to see if my library has it

I do like picking more vegetarian friendly or vegetarian restaurants when I can. With my parents, it seems they like to pick the place I'm least likely to find something (White Castle/Church's chicken was one of their last choices over Labor Day ugh)

Have you seen any of the articles that talk about which produce are better bought organic because of their thin skins? I need to find one and write the produce down

Those vegetarian stuffed peppers sound great :). Do you remember what kind of meat did Ken use? I like using Morningstar's sausage crumbles the best because they're so spicy Shaman rarely notices

Sounds like a neat book. I really haven't read much about macrobiotic diet. From the little I hear, sounds like it's way outside of our price range

That's cool Ken has a vegetarian cousin. From what you've said of his family, it's hard to picture any of his relatives being vegetarian

Oh yeah, I'll question on animal lard or vegetable oil. The idea of animal lard is just so gross for me. Speaking of animal lard, ever notice that to get baked good mixes that don't have animal lard, you end up paying at least 40 cents more? I never stopped to look at the ingredients in the Jiffy mixes. I finally did and I no longer buy them :D

1- Have you made any new-to-you vegetarian dishes this week? Was it good or bad?

*** Nothing new, but I did make vegetarian chili and I have not made that in months. It turned out very good.

2- How many vegetarian cookbooks do you have? Which one(s) do you recommend?

*** I have about 6 or 7. I don't recommend any of them because most of the recipes are weird. I think I got them as gifts thru the years. I get all my recipes on the internet now, or I see them in the paper and cut them out.

3- Are the first or only vegetarian in your family?

*** My dh, dd and I are the only vegetarians in the family.

4- When it comes to eating at a restaurant, how concerned are you about any animal products in the food? Do you question exactly what's in the food? How do waiters tend to behave towards any food questions that you have?

*** Very concerned. Through the years if we eat out at a fancy shmancy restaurant (not very often, lolol), I've found that even their pasta dishes are made with a beef or chicken based broth. I have not had any problems with waiters.

5- Organic or non-organic veggies & fruit... does it matter to you? Why or why not?

*** Non-organic most of the time due to price. Organic is expensive. There is a produce store semi-close by that is pretty reasonably priced and most of their produce is organic, but we tend to try to get all the shopping done in one trip w/o having to drive to many stores.

you got me after I took my hat off :D

Vegetarian chilli is so good. My dad used to make a chilli with bulgar wheat & zuccinni in it. Yum.

Oh, you sound like my friend Susan's mom. She has dozens of vegan cookbooks, some of them really odd. She says she gets them all the time at gift-giving holidays.

ah yes, on the beef and chicken broth. I find that so frustrating. It causes me to often go for Campbells soup, rather than storebrand, since they more often have one of those broths.

It's too bad that the price of organic makes it preventative for most people. I hope some day the price comes down, when it isn't so faddish

I know you should NEVER eat strawberries that aren't organic. THey SOAK up the chemicals. Unfortunately the organic strawberries are so expensive that this generally means we never eat strawberries. Carrots are supposed to be pretty bad too. You can get cheap organic carrots at Wal Mart. I have a great and easy suffed bell pepper recipe.

Prepare one package of spanish rice according to instructions

Cook morning star or boca veggie crumblers in a big skillet. Stir in cooked spanish rice & one can of corn. Mix together until hot and add 1/2 c. salsa. Stuff into bell peppers and cook at 350 for 20 minutes.

It's so easy & so good. You can also top with cheese. This is a big hit in my family.

that stuffed bell pepper recipe sounds great

I tend to get the peeled baby carrots that are organic. Seems they're about the same price as the non-organics at Walmart. I've never looked at the prices of organic strawberries, but then I do assume that "organic" label is normally going to put something outside our budget. I do get things like yogi tea tho,
