QOTW- vegetarian speciality foods

Vegetarian speciality foods have been brought up recently and I wonder how many of us budget to be able to buy those things. I know I don't. Most of the time, things like soymilk are way out of my price range (I drink homemade ricemilk). There's speciality foods I'd really like to have regularly, like veggieloaf and soymilk, but I'm fine making do with lots of beans and my homemade milks

I just buy a lot of Morningstar Farms, and tofu. Sometimes I go to Whole Foods and buy vegetarian "beef jerky" cuz I love it. It's pricey for a little piece, but once in awhile it's fun to buy. I usually don't like a lot of the specialty stuff. I prefer making things from recipes I find on the internet.

My budget doesnt allow me to buy many fancy things, once in a awhile I splurge and buy the marinated tofu, which is still pretty cheap compared to buying meat.. and I guess its not that expensive since Im buying/cooking for one.

I love Morningstar Farms too and if I have a few dollars to splurge with, most often it'll be with one of their products. I love the "sausage" crumbles. Vegetarian "beef jerky"... sounds interesting, but then I didn't like beef jerky even when I was eating meat. Might be interesting to try my meat-eating dh on it tho :D

Hm, I've never tried marinated tofu, sounds neat. When I've had tofu, I usually just bought the regular Silk tofu.

You like the skim milk powder? That's good. For me it's the homemade rice milk. Guess I'm showing my vegan leanings :D but I can't imagine using skim milk powder , but that's good if it works for you

We always have coupons for Morningstar Farm products. Plus, we get these in-store coupons when they give us the receipt, and there coupons on there too. I always use coupons when we shop because things are expensive. BUT, something someone once told me a long time ago: If I'm not buying meat, it's okay to spend the money on vegetarian stuff, or pay a little more for asparagus. The food is healthy and it's all we eat so it's worth it.

I love marinated tofu! I have not bought it in a long time. What I do is buy regular firm tofu and let it drain all day. I put it in a colander and put something heavy on top to press it down, and of course the colander is over a bowl to catch the water. When I get home, the tofu is almost like the consistency of the marinated tofu that comes in those vacuum sealed packages. Then I let it soak in some Tamari sauce (like a soy sauce) and I'm all set. That reminds me, before I leave for work today, I better start draining the tofu cuz that is part of our dinner tonight. :-)

I do figure that too. Like "I'm not eating the meat so there's more food for dh, not drinking the milk so ds can drink more... and what I'm not eating, not drinking saves money that probably equals up to more than the price of soymilk".

Does morningstar farms have coupons on their website? We don't get the newspaper so I'm stuck looking for coupons online, but so many places seem to have coupons for products I would never use

When DH is cooking he tends to make everything from scratch. If I become in charge of a meal I am off to the the morningstar farm section at Kroger :) I like the fake chicken patties for my lunch. We also like the fake steak strips for our tacos. The boys will eat morningstar steak tacos, we tried regular tempah tacos last week and they said ewwww and gagged quite dramitically, sigh. So we end up paying the extra $ because they;ll eat their fake meats instead of regular tofu and such.

My dad knows how to make his own tofu, we tried it once and the huge pot that we had created a small square of tofu, LOL! It takes some practice to get it right.

That's awesome your dh cooks. My dh does a lot of stuff, but he does not cook. I make a few things from scratch too, but I love Morningstar Farm products because they are easy to prepare and we like the way it tastes.
