Friday Thoughts- annoying questions...

annoying questions from non-vegetarian... we all get them I bet, especially when it comes to sitting down to a big meal. Other than the basic "why?" what are some questions you've gotten?

Early on in going back to being a vegetarian, my son (7yrs at the time) asked "Why can't you eat meat?"

im a non-vege,,,
but i appreciate good vegetarian food, no doubt
and im very aware of the positive things about going veg.

now that i know q's about vegetarianism are annoying
hehe,,, ill let you all know what i have asked before...

-why do you care about the animals so much?
(i totally understand that you all care but)
they were put on this earth to be eaten!!!!

-dont you ever want to just eat a big piece of steak?

-dont you get tired of eating nothing but vegetables?

-isnt it simply an inconvience?
(it can be at times!)

-you know,,,
almost everything you eat has some kind of animal biproduct in it
dont you???
(that does have a lot of truth to it)

-that vegetable stir fry you are eating
came in contact with the same utensils and cooking surface
that a varitey of meat touched,,,!
are you still really gonna eat it,,,?
after all,,, you are a vegetarian.

that is just a few of the ones i have asked,,,,

dont hate on me for being a non-veg on the veg board
again i really understand the benifits of being a vegetable-head
as i call it,,,
i just like what tastes good.

OMG! There are so many annoying questions that I could go on forever about this.....Here are a few...

1. WHY are you a vegetarian? ...you know the tone this question has...

2. What about protein?

3. So you don't cook meat for your kids? Aren't you worried about their health?

4. When will you start eating meat again?

There are so many dumb questions. I had a teacher in college that was veg (as was I), she said when people asked her why she would say, "Which answer do you want? Do you want the health one...the animal rights one...the environmental one?" I thought that was a great answer because for most of us the answer is pretty complex.

I love your teacher's answer. That's so me. There's too many reasons I am vegetarian to give a short answer, hence why I often say during a meal "Let's enough the food."

oooo that tone gets me every time lol. Tho I'm not even sure if most people are aware of the tone they use.

Worried about the kids' health really irritates me. I know my son is small (but then I'm only 4'11"), but I have a friend Susan, who posts here sometimes, whose uncle is over 6' and he was

The questions I get are similar to what we all get.

Why are you a vegetarian? How do you get your protein? Do you miss eating meat? Don't you get a craving for a hamburger?

Then when they find out my 11 year old dd is a vegetarian and has been since birth, they question her health. IF my dd is standing right next to me when they ask this annoying question I just tell them to look at her and ask them if they think she looks deprived or sick or whatever they think she should look like, lol.

Here is the annoying statement I love the best, lolol! Lots of times someone will find out I'm a vegetarian and they will say, "OH! So am I! But I do eat fish."

I don't qualify someone as a vegetarain if they are eating something with a face. (eyes, etc...)

With that said, I'm sure vegans might look at me (I'm a lacto-ovo vegetarian), as someone who might not be a true vegetarian either, but that brings me to how I answer questions regarding being a vegetarian in general: We (my dh, dd and I) do our best. We do what we can do with what we believe in.

nods, doing our best is important... and not the same for everyone. I'd love to drink only soymilk, but my family just can't afford it. That "I'm almost like you" type comment (which is what I take 'but I eat fish still' to be) is so irritating to me. I never say "I'm vegetarian and I think you're wrong for not being vegetarian" so that rush to defend one's diet really gets me.

Isn't it funny how people seem to have one meat thing, like steak or hamburgers, that they immediately think to ask us vegetarians if we miss it? Sometimes, when I'm in a foul mood, I feel like asking "Have you ever eaten human meat? Do you think you'd miss it if you couldn't get it again?"

Thanks. I tried to answer honestly from my POV without getting angry or flustered. The lack of respect I feel vegetarians are often given can get me real hot under the collar, like when my sister jokes about insects getting into the oil at fast food restaurants. As Herb the vegetarian dragon says in the book by that name "I don't tell you to stop eating meat. Why do you tease me about my vegetables?"

Sher,

I totally had to laugh at your post about fish because I've heard that so many times too. I've actually had people say, "I'm a vegetarian too. I only eat fish and CHICKEN!" I think people think if they are off of pork and beef they are veg. TOO FUNNY!

I am vegan, but I became vegan because my youngest (18 months) is allergic to milk & eggs and he's nursing. I can't have it if he's nursing. I decided that if he has to eat vegan than we all will in the house. Not fair to him if the rest of us get REAL cheese and he can't. When I started I would have said I will never stay vegan outside of my home once he's not nursing (who knows when that will be), but now I think I'll always be vegan. I feel so much better about myself & my planet NOT eating milk & eggs. That being said, I think the fact that you DO eat those things is completely your business. I don't look at you like those seafood eaters you mentioned! LOL!

Chicken? LOL! You are right, some people who don't eat red meat consider themselves vegetarian.

I keep telling my dh and dd that we should try a vegan diet for at least a week. I don't even think it would be that difficult for us because we don't drink milk (except a little bit w/ cereal and we could always use soy or rice milk) and we don't eat eggs, I just like to bake a lot. My dd loves cheese so that may be difficult but even with cheese, we don't eat that much. I used to LOVE cheese and ever since we also became kosher, the kosher brands of cheese do not taste good to me. In this past year, I lost weight because I stopped eating cheese.

If I have any questions I'll ask you, okay?
