That heavy after-eating feeling...

Talking to a friend on Saturday who was raised vegetarian and has never tasted meat. He commented that he's been told that eating meat leaves you with a "heavy feeling" and he can't imagine how people deal with it, even want it (case we talked about is my dh, who loves nothing better than to sit down and eat so much steak he feels like he can't move). He further said that it must be hard for meat eaters to think, be productive after such a meal.

I was a vegetarian before going to the vegan cooking classes last year this time, so I already knew about that heavy feeling being missing in most vegetarian diets. I'm wondering how people deal with not having that heaving feel to let you know you are *full*, whatever your experience with vegetarianism is.

I definately feel full after a veg meal. Particularly if I eat grains. But I at times get a different 'heavy' feeling which I equate as more of a tummy ache, rock sitting in my stomach. This all goes back to the blood type diet for me. I don't think type o's (natural meat eaters) get that heavy feeling and mental fog that we type A's (natural vegans) get when we eat meat.

I feel absolutely horrible if I eat meat. Tummy ache, mental fog, heart burn. Of course that happens with many of the other foods not on my diet either. Like potatoes.

I find I can duplicate that "heavy feeling" (like you say a tummy ache etc) when I eat too many potatoes. I can't picture wanting that feeling tho lol, and I know my dh loves it

I think I still get that heavy feeling, but it's just not the same. I don't feel like I'm going to throw up or like I'm going to explode! I like NOT feeling sick after eating, so this is ok!!

I get that heavy feeling when I eat a lot of starchy foods or greasy foods. I don't get that drained I-never-want-to-move-again feeling, though. I read somewhere that meat can be addictive. It makes sense to me, because I have a lot less trouble stopping eating when I'm full than I did when I ate meat. I would just eat and eat until I couldn't eat anymore. Now I eat till I'm done and I can stop.

I know that *many* (I think* meats have some level of triptophan, especially turkey. Tho according to Dr. Nealey in his "Depression: the way out" seminar, we require triptophan for healthy mind function. I'll have to grab my workbook for that & share some of the vegetarian sources of triptophan.

When I was pregnant with Finn, I carried him superlow from early second trimester on. I looked like I was "ready to pop" in July/August, when he wasn't born until November, so I really couldn't stand being too full. However, I had superbad heartbad and only drinking whole milk would help. I was drinking a gallon a day by the time he was finally born lol.

I'm mostly like to go too far with potatoes and get that too full for some reason. I do adore potatoes cooked so many ways tho. I'm wondering if I'd have the same experience with sweet potatoes.
