My new garden gloves are dirty!

My Dh and I went for a walk to see what the neighbours gardens look like and got some ideas. Then we went to the nursery and asked a lot of questions. I now know what to do with the lilac bush we received as a housewarming gift last year. Then we went home and started digging and filling with dirt. The area was on a slope so we needed to make it flat. We have many bricks left from the house so we are using them to border the garden. It's just a small one. If we are going to embarrass outselves we just want to start out small. Thank God it started to rain. I was getting tired. My husband's back is not the best either though I know he won't complain. I figure this will be trial and error. We don't expect to achieve greatness in one try. Thank you all for the advice but don't go too far away. I am sure I will need more soon.

No matter how much advice you get, you will change your minds and your garden many times, I promise you! It sounds as though you've started putting something together that will look really nice though. Good luck with the lilac. I love lilacs...got to be one of my favorite flowers.

LM--New gloves dirty? That's a great sign! LOL I have several pairs of new dirty gloves that I forget to use! Lilacs are my favorite shrub--miss our big row of them. Take your time---you're off to a good start when you talk to the neighbors and the nursery staff. They know what works in your area. Have fun! HUGS, Kathie

I have a pair of purple cowhide garden gloves-probably from a purple cow-right?? I use them lots especially when pulling stickery stuff. Well, it looks like I killed about 3-4 little baby bushes while we were gone to Vegas. But they seemed to have been a worthy sacrifice to the drought god as it has rained some almost everyday we've been back. Think it is waiting for me to buy more bushes before it dries up again, huh? The best advice I can give (gardening-wise)is to always buy the smaller plants like the 1 gal size instead of the 10 gal size. lol Then if they die, you didn't pay as much, right? And if you can take it, I love my Advil at the end of the day with a cup of hot chocolate and a hot soak bath. That gets me ready to abuse myself again the next day. I have 2 huge (over 6 ft)lilac bushes that I can see and smell from this window. Then the neighbor has a lilac tree that hangs over the fence and blooms just a bit later than my bushes. Love it here when they are in bloom and it is warm enough to open a window and smell their fragrances. We have a half acre that I'm attempting to make into a yard again after probably over 20 years of people dumping rock on it. Ever the one to row against the tide. But I love working in the yard and the "public" side almost looks like we want it. Yeah! Hugs, BB

Lm,

One word of caution. Those lilacs are going to spread. Hope they are not to near the any buildings.

Thats about all I know about planting. LOL Good luck!

I love the idea of the aDvil, hot chocolate and the bath. It has been raining here off and on. I don't know if I can get back to it before the weekend. We want to put a fence up so I called the city for regulations. He said to just use the survey stakes. The builder took them out to lay the sod. Apparently that is illegel. Once we know where the fence will be we can pick the spot for the lilac bush. They are my most favourite flower. A mother's day must!!
