My 12yo chow-retriever dog, Fred, died tonite. My D(now 27) brought him home when he was just a few months old & he's been mine since. He's been acting REALLY peak-ed all day, noticeably hard time walking & working harder than he should have to for his breaths. I asked DH how I should handle it if he keeled while he was at work (he left at 4 this afternoon so won't be back til Monday mornin early) & his answer was we'd be digging a hole, but it wouldn't happen!?! I'm thinking I may go start one tonite as it was still 107 degrees at 7 tonite before the sun went down (it's back to 100+ daytimes again) & the backhoe is not working right now. Of course both 16S & 19SS are out for the evening & 13S is on crutches w/his leg in a cast so I had to call a family friend to help me get him up off the floor onto a wagon so I could cart him to wherever I need to (for now he's in the shop building). Is this summer over yet!?!?! I need to bury myself back in my schoolwork, subbing, & whatever cause of the moment I'm working on at the HS as this kind of busy is wearing thin & I'm already finding myself dragging thru the days feeling quite unproductive.

Joanne, I'm so sorry. He was a companion for a long time. I know this must be a really difficult time for you. It would be so hard to dig a grave in that kind of weather. Once you have him buried, though, you should plant something on the grave. I have a lilac bush over one grave, a rose bush over two other, and forget-me-nots over some others. I kind of like that.

I don't blame you for not feeling productive. Frankly, in that kind of heat, all I would be able to produce would be sweat! Take care.

Sorry about your dog. It is hard to lose long time pets. We have 5 dogs buried under the dining room window. We buried the last one a year ago and now we have a yr old black lab replacement who is the best dog ever. But of course we have said that about each one.
