My first major turn-off with Martha

Stewart was when I read that she had 40+ sets of china. Now, I suppose I'm just jealous, but that seems excessive to me. I don't think I could even fit 40 sets of china in my house...even piling one set in the bathtub and keeping a couple sets under each bed. However, I can understand the pull that dishes have. There are so many times that I've come across a dish pattern and really wanted a set of it. In fact, I've had so much trouble picking out just one that I ended up with white dishes with a tidy gold ring around the edge. Well, I am BORED with them. So this week-end when I was in the dollar store with Zana ( I LOVE dollar stores!) I saw some plates...yellow with green leaves and different colored fruits...yes, garish but very perky) and yearned for them. That was when I had my scathingly brilliant idea (anybody remember where that line came from?). I bought a large plate, bowl and mug...and am planning on buying the same pieces every time I come across another set of dishes that I like (preferably in dollar stores since that 3 pc set cost me $3.) So, in case I ever have company here who is reckless enough to eat with me, they will have a matching set of dishes...ie: their cup will match their bowl and plate...but won't match anyone else's. I love it! Best idea I've had in a long time. Okay...it's the only idea I've had for a while, but I still think it's a great one.

Kat, when I see a pattern I like I usually buy

a small set for 2 or 3; have so many now lol. As

for complete china sets, we have 4 or 5 and at

least that is a reasonable amount lol, not 40.

No wonder I am running out of space.

HUGS,

Cindy

p.s. I even bought a set in Vegas lol

Maybe Martha is over compensating for not having a tea set when she was a little girl. My mil had several complete sets of china because my fil had 2 tours of VietNam and he bought them for her plus she bought a beautiful Lenox Christmas set. I have a pressed glass Christmas set, a set of 12 Fiesta plates, a set of china (for $120 total)that I bought after I thought they might survive my children and then our everyday clear plates and bowls. We tend to collect mugs too. I've been thinking lately that I'd love to get either the Lenox Swedish Lodge dishes or buy an entire set of the dishes that I only bought one plate of in Sienna, Italy. Then I add it up and think I'd rather fly somewhere and see some place new. lol I love dishes and if I could afford a "dish room" and travel, I would probably be like Martha and have everybody shaking their heads at me. I also love table linens. Sometimes I wonder if it all is rooted in those aluminum glasses we had when I was a child that got banged up enough that it seemed like there was never a dinner time without a glass spilling milk. I think that buying a place setting in whatever appeals to you will look beautiful on your table. lol My favorite Martha moments have been when she has children on her show and she tries to steer them to say something or do something and they politely but firmly disagree with her on camera. Watch a Halloween show to see what I mean. Hugs, BB

A truly marvelous and unique Kat-idea! I'm with Paula Jane...I have one set of

what-I-thought-I'd-like-but-never-use-china. The dishes I like the most may be very similar to what you bought Kat...and I got mine at a grocery store promotional. Problem is, they ran out before I got everything I wanted! GRRR!

Kat I have never loved Martha Stewart. I think your idea with the dishes is great. Hey did I tell you that they opened another dollar store here in Yuma? That make a total of five of them.

It wan in Yuma, Mary, that I went to my first real dollar store and was hooked. We still talk about the amount of stuff we hauled away from there for the rest of our trip!

I don't actually have a set of china. I do, however, have a set of dessert plates that were handppainted by my great great grandmother...a diferent flower on each plate. They are, of course, priceless to me.

My Pfaltzgraff went to my son a few years ago. It also was a gift from my dh and both kids so I didn't want to just toss them. But I do admit to tossing a few when the lines across them went more than half way. After it was gone, it was easy to look at new dishes lol. Hugs, BB

Kat,

I think thats a terrific idea. Have white dishes here also and add a colored plate sometimes. otherwise...boring, boring, boring. All different place settings will look so festive.

Been eyeing up some Corelle with birdhouses tho. My kitchen has birdhouses in it.

Great idea Kat,

Rain

No China here, Im just not a fancy girl. I have my Mikasa I bought 25 years ago and I still love. I also have a set of 8 in glass(flower design), which I love using for lunches with the girls (Dining Divas). Gabby
