High School Reunions

I went to my first high school reunion this last weekend, our 35th. I really wasn't expecting to have much of a good time. I'd been more or less a "fringe" person and got along with lots of different groups but never felt like I belonged to any particular one. Also I was painfully shy in high school (Partly because a girl who I babysat for had told me how ugly I was and since I'd thought she was so beautiful, why should she say that if it wasn't the truth? Now I can ask, "What WAS her problem??")and I knew that the four girls from my 'hood that I did so much with were going to be no-shows. Well I have to tell ya. It was almost as much fun as Vegas! Age is a great equalizer! One guy saw me from across the room and walked directly over and said, "Bobbie Miller, right? I always thought you looked just like Patty Duke in her TV show. You know the one where she played twins? I thought you were like her English version." lol I asked him where he was 36 years ago when I really needed to hear that and we laughed. Others came up to me and reminded me of tutoring them in study hall to get them through some class, while others actually remembered some of my slogans that had won prizes during basketball seasons.(I'd forgotten about them totally!)(I'd also written my friend's speeches when she ran for student body offices. Guess I've always been a writer and just never thought of myself that way.) It really was like a big LaChaim Party. We all were laughing about getting rounded and grayed and bragging about children and grandchildren and grateful to still just be here. I was sad to see that the boy who took me on my first date as well as my doctor's dd who shared my dream of seeing Europe were both in the list of "to the memory of." Even a guy who had snubbed me back then because he'd checked out my house before deciding to NOT ask me out came over and told me that he was happy to see me and thanked me for being the first person to respond to his e-mails about the reunion. So, dh was right. I was glad that I went. And I got to see cousins as well and play with a golf ball collector (a little tractor thingy not a weird person lol). Hugs, BB

Bobbie it sounds like a great time. The last one of mine I went to was my 25th and I had a great time at that one. My class just hasn't had another one since then. This is my 35 class reunion year too I wonder if they will have one this year? We usually go to Jim's reunions though as his class is really good at having them every five years. You are so right age is a great equalizer we all realize how stupid some of the things we did is high school were.

So glad you had a great time

Love

Mary

So glad you had such a positive experience, BB! I have to confess, reunions scare the bejeebies out of me. The last one I went to was #15. Everyone made such a$$es of themselves that I vowed never to go to another. However, your post may change my mind about that. Like you, I was one of those fringey kids, too. Short and smart, the one the boys liked to be friends with but never date. (Probably didn't help that my dad was the supercop of the area, either.)

I would like to think that I would have a reunion like that by this time. Last year was our 30th. (I didn't go, needless to say.) Don't suppose we'll have another for awhile. But I may go to the next one now after reading your post.
