A letter that touched our hearts

I just happened to read this letter of a couple's

account when they travelled to Germany on that

day in 2001...no one knew, of course.

It's now nearly 2 years later, but still brought

tears to my heart....

My husband and I flew Singapore Air to Germany on our honeymoon.

We just happened to leave JFK early in the morning on Sept. 11, 2001!

When we arrived in Frankfurt, we took the train to Trier

and took a taxi to our hotel just outside of town.

The taxi driver had the radio on, and we kept hearing references to New York, but it was all in German and our driver did not speak English (so he indicated).

But when we got to our hotel, the manager greeted us with ?have you heard what happened??

Of course we had not, and she escorted us up to our room and put the TV on CNN,

to which we became glued for the next several hours.

As we toured around Germany for the next two weeks,

we found the German people to be very sympathetic.

There were bouquets of flowers and candles with signs in most market areas,

many stores had signs in English with good wishes to Americans

and statements that they were behind us. Everyone was very friendly

and talkative when they found out we were Americans,

and the first question from most of them was

do you have family in New York?

As we met other Americans on our journey, it felt very

good to know that if we were going to be stranded in Germany

with no way to get home for awhile, we would not be the only ones!

It is amazing how such a terrible incident can bring together

strangers and turn them into friends!

But, indeed, when it was time to fly home, only a few changes

had been made and we ended up arriving two hours earlier

than we were originally scheduled!

We loved Germany and plan to return next year for another two weeks!

Mary Hornsby

note from cindy...I so miss Germany. I lived there as a child and when

I returned some 20 years later to live there as an adult,

so much came back to me, plus the language

which I spoke with hardly an accent.
