Baby grandson in hospital tonight
| Mon, 02-18-2008 - 5:25am |
Our youngest dgs, Paxton, 6 weeks old now, is in hospital tonight. My DIL took him early this afternoon at my insistence. He's had the flu for a couple of days. My concern, after talking and asking questions, was that he may be dehydrated. They ran blood tests while giving him IV fluids. At first, they told her she'd be going home with him. Then, they came back in to let her know that they had some concerns about a blood test and would be keeping him for a few days. They then did a spinal tap. Since my ds's ship, the USS Never Sail, hasn't left due to engine failure, he was called off the ship to go to the hospital. It is fairly clear after talking to both of them that the doc's are checking baby for bacterial meningitis. I'm sure that you are all aware of how serious this can be. The culture takes some time to grow, 2-3 days. We'll know more as we go along. I wish so much that I could be there to hold my dgs that I have never held yet.

well, that is scary! my thoughts and prayers are with you..
my best hope is that it is nothing so serious and the drs are being overly cautious
both of my dgds were hospitalized when they were less than 6 mo.
the first for a really bad URI..neede to be in a "misting tent" to breathe
the other for suspected leukemia...unusual blood test results...turned out to be nothing
hope the same for this baby and a quick recovery
best wishes to worried parents and grandparents

HI Steph
I am glad you talked your dil into taking the baby to the hospital. I will be keeping everyone in my prayers and hope that the Dr are just being extra careful and soon that little guy will be feeling much better. I am glad that your Ds was still here so he could come to the hospital to be with his little son.
((((HUGS))))
Thanks for the update Steph. Keep us informed as you find out what is going on. Sending angels to watch over that little one.

Steph, I am so sorry to hear that. And it is so
important to communicate with the families, especially
in a case like his.
Please keep us posted....
Hugs,

~*~ Aloha to all .... ~*~
Aw, Steph, I am sending Ps&PTs also...for that little guy to use all the strength he has to battle this!
Shame on that hospital staff for not being communicative about the baby with the kids. There is just no excuse for that!
Please keep us informed, okay. Now you rest, too, and don't get yourself drained and feeling badly.
Hugs,
Red
Steph,
I'm
TY you all! Today, they had to take him out to draw more blood. Someone had messed up the culture. They had to start the 48 hours over at 1PM this afternoon. At this point, the worst case scenario that they are looking at is 14 days in hospital for treatment if the culture is positive. They have told ds and dil that it is life threatening if he does have it so they know that and know how serious it is.
Today, his mommy held the phone up to him so he could hear me, and I could hear him. It was the first time I got to do that since he was born. He sounded so very sweet. She also gave him a kiss for me.
I think (and it certainly appears) that the biggest problem they are dealing with in dealing with the staff in the hospital there is that it's a Navy hospital. I always am disappointed that the men and women who protect are country aren't provided with better medical services in the states. It just seems like they should get the best, eh? My ds has asked my dil to take him to the local children's hospital if there is future need.
Prayers for the little one. Hoping your next post states he is much better. Will keep positive thoughts for your loved ones.
Have to agree about the military hospitals and care. We should be ashamed. They deserve better then that.
Oh Steph, what a major worry for you all.
