Any idea why this would be???

This is from the 1872 Rules for Teachers, Salina KS...
"Any teacher who smokes, uses liquor in any form, frequents pool halls or public halls, or gets shaved in a barber shop will give good reason to suspect his worth, intention, integrity and honesty."
It's the "shaved in a barber shop" part that has me wondering...???
Check out the eighth grade test on this page...

My guess would be that barber shops were the male equivalent of a woman's beauty salon today. Women gossip an awful lot in beauty salons. I remember as a little girl I would go with my father when he went to a barber shop and the men there would gossip a lot too. I imagine they still do. I know people gossip in unisex salons. So my guess would be that the Rules for Teachers felt that gossiping was not a good thing to do.

Hi Red
Some pretty strict rules. That test was also very hard. When my Mom got married in the 1930's she was a school teacher in IN. She had to quit teaching because at that time female teachers had to be unmarried. Once they got married they were required to resign.
Have no idea why getting a shave in a public barber shop would be a bad thing. Weird huh?
Love ya
I didn't know
so I decided to google to find out more
I found out the "rules" were false!

LOL, the last school I taught at made the faculty sign a Moral Code or we weren't hired. The Code stated teachers must not be seen in bars, smoke within view of parents or students and must dress appropriately. No clothing showing mid section or short shorts are allowed. Then after signing the Code had to be interviewed by the church board members
OK now I feel totally
