an intro - I just found this board and it seems like I might fit in here. I'm Sue in San Francisco - happily married to my DH for thirty years. We have had an empty nest for **ack** three years. Our DD, 25, DS, 23, and DD's fiance share a house about ten blocks from where DH and I live. DD is a pre-school teacher and also in her senior year of college majoring in child and adolescent development - she has pretty much worked her way through, with a little help from us. DS does high end home remodels and is studying for his contractor's license...and they are great people...I'd think so even if they weren't mine. The last few months have brought a bunch of changes in my life and I admit to struggling a bit with it all. I have a genetic form of arthritis which attacks cartilege and I had five screws put into my foot to fuse the bones in mid-December. It has been a waaaaaaaaaaaay bigger thing than I was told to expect...I was three months in a wheelchair and am just now back at work in a compression stocking with an orthopedic boot and - sheeesh - a cane (not to mention A LOT of pain and swelling, four + months post-op.) So, being disabled is quite a curve ball for someone who used to work out every morning at the gym. Secondly, I have been a teacher for thirty five years, the last thirty at my current high school. Even though I am not eligible for SS or Medicare for quite awhile yet, I have made the decision to retire at the end of this year. I will need work but I don't want another job...so there's a biggie to get a handle on. So far, I've just been keeping a list of possible things I am qualified to do and see where that goes. At least I will continue to collect a paycheck until mid-August. DH is significantly older than I and he has been retired for quite awhile, although he keeps fit and busy. So, closing the door on thirty years of my life is a bit scary...I'm just trying to see what unfolds. I look forward to getting to know you all.

Hi Sue, and welcome! We have a member, Dutch/Barb, who is a retired teacher and can give you all kinds of advice and support on that! She's great and I'm sure she'll be by to put in her 2 cents.
Ow, that surgery does not sound like fun, especially when you're used to being able to do whatever you want. This time of life is not all it's cracked up to be, bodywise, it seems. Mine just does not match up with my adolescent brain, LOL!
What part of the country do you live in? I'm Red by the way, from Washington State. I have 2 grown DDs and 3 grandsons, almost 8, almost 7 and 5. They're so much fun...I just love being a granny!
I work full time and like to spend my off time gardening, watching baseball
Hi Sue
I am Mary one of the cls here on this board. I am so glad you decided to post with us.
Wow that is some problem you have there and the surgery sounds painful to say the least. I sure hope this problem is getting better for you.
My Dh and I retired officially in 2003. I had not worked since my children were born so was a sahm. My children are 32 and 34 now. Dd being the youngest is a Nurse Practioner
Hi - I'm a fourth generation Northern Californian and I have lived in San Francisco since I came here to go to college - a lonnnnnnng time ago. I have an aunt and cousins in Spokane and a dear friend living outside of Seattle. I have no grandchildren yet...DD jokes that her job as a pre-school teacher is saving her from getting married and starting a family before she finishes college - LOL!
Thanks for the welcome. It must be hard to have grandchildren and not have them nearby. Both DD and DS, plus DD's fiance, are all born and raised San Franciscans and they swear they're never going anywhere, but I worry abou the high cost of living here, esp. since DS is determined to buy a house, something DH and I, both being teachers, could never afford to do. My darling DS says he's going to buy a fixer-upper (he has the skills)and when it's all done, "you and Dad can live in it, and I'll put in an in-law apt. for me."
Hi Sue and welcome to our group!
Hi Sue...I'm another Mary but everyone calls me Free. I live in TX, have been married to the same and only man for 43 years. We have three kids, boy 43, boy 39 & girl 36. Grands come next, girl 16, twin boys 10 and girl 9, what a roudy bunch they are too, lol. We have one dog named Chuckie, a very well behaved dog and all the neighborhood cats going in our yard. Dh is almost 70 and I am almost 62. I work 2 days a week for my bil and do for my 91 yr old mom when she needs me. She is very active, lol.
So sorry to hear about your arthrits and the surgery sure sounds painful. Good healing and get back to a good point in your life.
My dh is being forced to retire at the end of May, the business is closing, so it really isn't a happy place around here. We will be fine once all the dust settles and go on with the next phase of our lives.
Welcome to our board and hope to see you around here a lot. Love and

Welcome Sue!
Hi Sue
Well with kids you never know about them staying put. My dh worked in retail before he retired and we were transfered to AZ. We love it here and just cannot think of moving back to the snow. Summers here are just plain HOT though.
The dog in the picture is my pomeranian. She is 8 years old and pretty sure she does run this household. LOL Like you we let her think she does. We have two dogs our other one is 17 and beginning to have some problems with her hind legs. Getting so she cannot walk. She is just a mutt that was dropped in our yard when she was just a pup.
I do miss the boys but Dd is good to send lots of pictures and we go back as often as we can. My Ds little boy comes out to see his father for the summer and he lives with us so we get to spend time with him more.
Hope you have a good Wednesday Sue

Hi Sue, I'm adding my welcome to all the others. I'm Jan from the Chicago area, married 38 yrs, no kids, no pets. It sounds boring, but it's not. I used to host some of the online chats, here, before they got rid of them. Now, we chat on yahoo, if you're interested.
Dh has been dealing with some health issues, so that keeps me busy, plus he works from home, so is here 24/7. He used to travel a lot, but his

Hi - thanks for the welcome. DH has a dear first cousin in Vancouver, BC, and we have visited them a few times - Vancouver reminds me of San Francisco. Do your DDs live near you? I am happy that I see my kids often, but also glad I don't have to do the wait-up-until-they-get-home-and-bite-my-nails-worrying stuff anymore. Now I just hope they're safe and go off to sleep!
