Farmer McNamara was known throughout the county for his magnificent singing voice.  He'd sing all day as he plowed or harvested, and all the neighbors would stop to listen.

One day his mule died, so he bought a new one.  It was a fine, strong creature, but what McNamara didn't know was that it was nearly deaf.  He hitched it to the plow and plowed a furrow, but when he got to the end he yelled, "Whoa!"  The mule didn't hear him and kept plowing.  McNamara had to yell louder and yet louder for the animal to hear him at all.  This quickly put paid to any singing, since his throat became so sore from having to shout at the mule.

One afternoon a neighbor stopped by for a visit.  "We never hear you sing any more," he told McNamara.  We miss it terribly; you have such a wonderful voice."

"I'm afraid that's true," McNamara replied sadly.  "Since I bought this deaf mule, all the neighbors hear any more are my riled Irish whoas."
