Question about blood tests.

A friend of mine is never late, she is exactly every 28 days to the minute. Last month was the first month her and her DH actually started "trying" and now she is almost a week late, but she has taken 2 HPT's and both are BFN. I told her that's what happened to me when I tested with HPT's and that maybe her HCG wasn't high enough. So I told her to get a blood test to ease her mind, but this too came back negative. The nurse told her that she might be testing too early---for a blood test? Is there such a thing as too early for a blood test? And can blood tests ever show negative results and the woman go on to have a normal pregnancy?

Any info would be great!

Also sprinkling some 27 week baby dust for everyone hoping to be pregnant!

Thanks,

Shar

Shar, there's a great string below that starts out "OMG..." that is about this precisely! Yes, sometimes hgc is too low to detect on a blood test, especially if they are trying to just get a Yes/No, not a count. I'd advise her to retest in a week if she still hasn't had AF. Good luck to her, and on your coming little one!

Hey Shar :)

I started the OMG thread....and yessssss apparantly it IS possible to test negative on both hpt's and the blood test. I'm living through that as I type ( and still thinking OMG!!! lol ). I've been told that it's very possible for the hcg levels to just be too low to pick up on the tests. Like you, I thought a blood test was FOR SURE. I had NO clue that it could be too early to show up with that! The jury is still out for me. I'm retesting with a hpt tomorrow morning. If it's STILL negative, I'll be checking to see what my doctor wants to do next. He's had cases where all tests are negative and it only proves a pregnancy with an ultrasoung. Again, before living thru this, I had never heard of anything like this. But, it can happen. So, I'd tell your friend to treat her body as if she IS pg, talk back with her doctor and retest in a good week or so. Hope it turns out the way she wants! :) Missy
