Getting negative HPTs while pregnant...
| Thu, 05-17-2007 - 5:34pm |
How far in your pregnancies were you while you were still not registering on a traditional HPT? My sister took two months before she could get a positive HPT. My last one on May 13 was still negative, but I have several symptoms of early pregnancy. (I'm currently on day 50 of this cycle). I've made my doctor's appointment, but I'm curious as to other's test results. Thanks!

I am 10 days late for my cycle (the past two months it has come like clockwork) and have done several HPTs. Only one had a faint (and I mean faint) positive sign, but this was after a couple of hours. I have been up at night/early morning with dry heaves, headaches, and so forth, so I am assuming I am pregnant. I have three other kids, but dont' remember when exactly I tested with them. Went in for a blood test this morning and should hear this afternoon. Is it really true that if I am pregnant, even the blood test might be incorrect this early (approx. 5 weeks if I am pregnant)?? Ugh. Thanks for your input!
Hi, tasimone. I haven't had the nausea you describe, but lots of headaches - and mostly all the rest of the classic pregnancy symptoms, too. I've heard that even a blood test at the doctor can show negative at 5 weeks --- I asked my doctor about this and he said not often but sometimes. I have an appointment August 13 because I wanted to wait long enough to make sure my hCG level is higher. I'm figuring I'll be about 8 weeks by then. My doc recommended I have a QUANTITATIVE rather than QUALITATIVE serum (blood) test. A qualitative test only shows pregnant or not pregnant, but a quantitative test shows the exact level of hCG. Do you know which one you had?
Wow, you find out this afternoon!
I wish I could say I've seen even a faint + on my hpt's... that has to have been exciting for you, just the possibility... the last two tests I took at home have had a darkening area in the center of the "-" sign... but no vertical line to indicate even a faint + .
I don't know what to make of the darker spot in the middle of the "-" sign... only that it did make my heart beat faster with hope. Fingers crossed for you, -Becky
Hello!
I actually did have the darkening in the center of the Fact Plus test (the one with the plus sign if you are pregnant). I didn't actually speak with my primary care so I am not sure if they are doing qualitative or quantitative. It is good to know though. So there still is hope if I don't have a positive blood test? I am hoping for positive results as I am sure you are. Hopefully I will know today but the nurse at the doctor's office kind of blew me off with "we'll let you know once the test comes back but we are kind of busy." I don't want to haunt them but it is a little nervewracking! Good luck with your blood test! Would this be the first for you? Thanks for the response!

Heather,
Like your sister, I didn't know until I was 2 months along that I was pg with my DD (who's now 9). I still remember the exact date & time because I was assuming I was just irregular (which I was back then) and my best friend told me to buy a test & call her back. I took the test & sure enough, "Annie" welcomed me to motherhood; 7 months & one week later, I had my beautiful baby girl!
Best of luck to you as you wait!

Hi again, tasimone. So I'm not crazy! You got a darkening in the middle of the "-" sign on the FACT PLUS test, too! That's the same brand I used. But only the last two tests have had the darkening - all the other times I've used them FACT PLUS tests before this (I've used like 20 by now!) the horizontal "-" line was all the same color... Well, I just now called the 1-800 number on the box and talked to one of their people about it. She told me that unless there is an actual vertical line, it means it is negative (not pregnant). I wanted her to at least give me HOPE and say something like "yeah, it could be..." So now I'm just bummed. But then I got your email and you said your hpt (same brand!) showed a darkening spot, too. So now I'm excited again.
This isn't my first pregnancy. I have a 19 year old daughter! It's my second marriage (married 14 years). I wanted so badly to have a child with my husband, but he had a vasectomy decades ago. When we got married he looked into having it reversed and the doctor told him it was growing back together on its own... then we started having issues we had to deal with with my daughter hitting teen years, so we never did get his vasectomy reversed medically. But every month I would hope it had successfully grown back on its own... I'm 46, so several years ago I just stopped hoping and accepted it was not God's plan for me to ever have another child.
Then all of a sudden I started having a cycle every other week, every 15 days, like clock-work. It's like my body was desperately producing eggs in one last effort to have a baby before production shuts down for good. I was about to see my doctor to get on the pill in order to stop the annoying frequency...but then they stopped all together. If I didn't have any other pregnancy symptoms, I would just assume this is menopause. But I have all the classic symptoms and - this probably sounds crazy - I just can't shake the "feeling" that I am pregnant. Maybe you also think I'm crazy for wanting a baby at my age, but I do. My husband and I are in great shape...it would be the most wonderful thing... Age is so relative. Besides, how old is too old to love a child?
Well, I hope you're pregnant since it sounds like you want this as badly as I do! -and I hope you find out SOON! The waiting is the hardest. Thanks for letting me obsess about it in an email. I don't have a lot of friends I can share my suspicions with -because of my age, I'm sure they would all think I needed to see a psychiatrist instead of an obgyn! Keep me posted. -Becky
The funny thing about your posting is that my husband had a vasectomy, too, but three years ago. We had just had our third child in 5 years (so I had three kids under the age of 4) and we decided it was enough. But now my youngest is 4 and we talked about the reversal for a good 6 months before we went thru with it. I really want another child, and even though I am 37 and everyone was telling me that my two older ones would be in school full time this September and my youngest would be in preschool 3 days a week that I would be crazy to have/want another one! Too bad for them...I really want another child!
He had the surgery in April, we tried during my June ovulation but I got my period right on time so it was disappointing to say the least. We tried at the beginning of this month and I held my breath starting at the 13th of July and nothing. It is very stressful to say the least. I tried those HPTs that say 5 days before and you will know that you are pregnant but they were negative (I've read many articles saying that is a crock); tried the digital test but "not pregnant" kept popping up; and then Fact Plus had the dark center on the left side and within a few hours a VERY VERY faint line up the middle. Who know! But now I am a good 10 days late with the symptoms and am still waiting for the doctor's office to call back. Who knows ... still hoping!
I definitely don't think age is a factor...if you can love a child and provide, then I say have a child! I have learned not to listen to what anyone else says...its your decision (and your husband's of course) so go for it!
I would think you are too young for menopause so hopefully it is only a matter of waiting for the blood test in August to figure it out! Hopefully I didn't get my blood test too soon! I'll keep my fingers crossed for you! Thanks again for the posting!
