I am not too happy about the new deep fryer that DH bought. He's been wanting one so badly, of which I will never understand. All that fat, cholesterol, etc. He's been wanting fried clams and a few other seafood dishes, and he can't go into too many local restaurants. Well, I finally gave in and said get it if you want it. He did. He also said we can look at it and check out what it says--am I being mean in saying to him that I want no part of it--it's his, you cook in it, you clean it and clean up all the mess on the counter, etc. Well, I did go around to the stores with him--I insisted that he check out cooking oils, breading supplies, the fish and how fresh, and most of all--clams. Well, it seems that clams can only either be bought minced, which we New Englanders frown on because we like fried clams with the bellies, not minced or just the strips. We can buy about 1½ dozen clams that still have to be shucked. Not for me. So, he got online and he can buy a quart of clams at some restuarant supply place for only $89.00 a quart. I hope he's thinking this over good. I am gently trying to tell him that it would be much cheaper--and easier--to just travel 30 miles to the next non smoking town and order a fried clam or fisherman plate.

My question, am I being wrong here? What are your thoughts. Bea

Tough question - I wouldn't want one in my kitchen - but we don't eat fried foods. Let him try it - it's his toy - don't make it too hard for him to admit it was a mistake. :o)

Why oh why don't they listen? My DH was a lover of all thing fried and of cheese--well the heart attack changed him but good. Now he looks at the fat even before me.Your DH is hurting himself.

Oh well- mine is watching the fats--but smoking. Grrrrrrrr martha

I do like your idea about going out for clams rather than having the temptation of a fryer in your kitchen. My DH also loves fried food, but I gain weight if I even smell it, so I never fix it (he doesn't cook).

Good luck, Bea! Cal

We bought a deep-fat fryer because my DH thought it would be easier! I suffered in silence until he retired. Then, after we had fried some catfish, I enlisted his help to clean that sucker. He was amazed that I'd been cleaning it by myself for several years; he couldn't figure how I managed to pour the fat from it, and then clean it to a fair-the-well. Just let your DH clean that thing for a few times, and then it will be fodder for the yard sale. LOL lottie77

P.S. What's a clam belly? You must realize I only see raw clams that are in the fish market section of the Kroger store. They look like round white objects floating in liquid. I do like fried clams, but have never fried any myself.
