I answer it and it is a couple that we didn't expect to see and haven't seen for a long, long time.  Of course I let them in and in surprise exchanged hugs.  We sat on the deck, and when 5 p.m. got here "he" said to "her" that it was 5 p.m. and of course I hear this.  I do nothing.  Then he said to her it is now 5:30 p.m. and I hear this again and I do nothing.  Then at 6 p.m. he said "well, it's 6 p.m., guess we should be going".  First time I ever did this but I jumped up and said it was nice seeing you and it was a great few hours, and nice to see you again, and blah, blah, blah--and I'm chuckling to myself because I had the inner feeling that a dinner was expected.

DH and I were having leftovers that night, we never get invited to their house but they always want to get together and we've seen them at least a dozen times on our turf and "once" at their place.  Am I being just mean and 'ornary or would some of you have done the same thing?  I really don't feel bad about not inviting them for dinner--guess I'm getting to be mean and crotchety in my old age.

Everybody have a good day, hugs.

Bea I am so dang proud of you, you didn't fall into the "OH please stay for dinner". I am so happy that you just dropped in unannounced" LOL. I agree I do like to be called before I have someone over, unless its Jim and Carol hey we take care of their dogs and they take care of ours thats different.

We had a couple come by that we were not even friends with a few years back and never once asked us how we were, it was all of their accomplishments and then "WHATS for dinner" I said we have already ate, but IHOP is really close and you would like it.

It would have been nice if they had asked to take you out for dinner, Bea...a nice pay back for stopping by unannounced. I really don't like it when people just pop in (except my children, brother & sister). I bet you get tons of company at the lake! Hope you can relax & enjoy today. Cal

What is it - open season for drop-in moochers - LOL. I'm so glad you just played the game until they got the message. What happened to manners? Even our generation seems to have forgotten a lot of them, let alone the kids. I sometimes feel bad that I'm not an old-fashioned proper hostess like my DMIL was. Here's a funny story - hope I'm not repeating.

DMIL always spent Thanksgiving with us. DBIL and family would drop her off on their way North to visit DSIL's folks, then pick her up the Sunday after the holiday. They knew to expect turkey sandwiches, pie and some coffee. One year I was preparing the food and realized the fridge was warm. Close inspection showed that the freezer was frosted up. About that time, DBIL and gang show up. I sat out the food, we ate, then DH and DBIL decided to tackle the freezer problem with a hair drier and chisel. We're all visiting and the back door bell rang - the door DH's customers use. Unannounced, here were 3 guys from out of town that DH had never met. They hadn't called ahead, were in the area, and just assumed we'd be home. DH was starting to explain that they were in the middle of something, when DMIL chimed in. Being a true Southern well-bred lady, she invited the strangers in for coffee and pie. They accepted and she went to work serving them. I was just amazed. DSIS and I could hardly keep from laughing. Eventually the fridge got fixed, family headed off for a 2 hr drive in a snowstorm, and strangers were sold some model goods and sent packing. By then I had a headache and needed a nap, not up to cutting up the turkey carcass. I found a box with a lid, put the turkey inside, covered it and put it on the porch to keep cool (fridge was just starting to chill again). After a nice nap, I went to retrieve the turkey and found the top off and the carcass in shreds. Seems the neighborhood cats had THEIR feast a little late. I cleaned up the mess, told DH & DSs that they were on their own for supper, then sat down with a nice big piece of pie. We all still laugh about it.

Good for you!! I've been lucky and not had 'drop in at dinner time friends'. We all seem to agree, you did the right thing. I could never walk in on some one like that. I know you are a great hostess, but thank goodness not a sucker.

Seems to me that you did exactly the right thing.
