Girls day at the pool

I organized a "play date" for DDIL and 2 DGrDs, plus DGrD and her 2 GrDDs. I'm picking up lunch from Subway, we'll eat in the park, then go to the indoor pool. DDIL thinks it might be too cool (80) for the outdoor pool. Sheesh, by this time of the summer the water is plenty warm and kids always complain about the temp until they get in and start playing. The little girls (5,6,8) are so excited about seeing each other and having this special day. The youngest is 9 mo., so we will have a floaty for her. She's a happy baby and I know I'll have a great time. I've tried to plan one "girls adventure" each week with eldest DGrDs this summer. It seems the younger generation of Mothers don't want to bother finding fun things for the kids to do in the summer - just plop them in front of a video game or TV. Our youngest DS fondly remembers the adventures we had each summer, even though we didn't have much $$ and never took long distance vacations. We would visit all the parks in the 2 cities here, check out the pools in neighboring towns, road trip 30 miles to area attractions. Picnics were standard - no fast food $$. They helped prepare and pack the food - he says that was always fun deciding what to take. Of course, we always took more food than we ate, but didn't waste it. A really special picnic would have leftover fried chicken from the night before.

I remember times such as that from my own childhood. Trips to the lake were an all day affair even if it was only 15 miles away from home. The wonderful picnic lunches packed by my mom, my best friend & her parents meeting us there, sand & sun burn, being so tired after a day in the sun & water... We didn't have TV & video games, etc. Entertainment was the radio. It's good that you're making the effort to get everyone together for a girl's day at the pool. Enjoy & tell us all about it! Cal

I'm home now, tired but smiling. The girls played together at the park, took turns pushing the baby on a swing, so DGrD got to sit and visit with us more. The indoor pool wasn't crowded at all and it was great fun. It has a water slide and other features, so girls were in their glory. It's great the way young kids don't have opinions about family members, just want to be together. The baby just loved splashing and squealing with joy. I'll bet they all fell asleep in the car on the way home. Chlorine is hard on my old eyes, but worth the memories. I took video of them.
