Old friends moving back

The bad side of living in a University city is that people are so transient. Over the years we've met and lost many friends. Today we had a visit from a couple who are retiring back here! We see them once a year when they are in the area and never run out of things to talk about. He is a model railroader like DH, she sews and gardens, like ME. They are buying a house 2 blocks from us! It will be so good to have them nearby.

The DH is being transferred here in January and will retire next summer. If they make the deal on the house, I expect to see them settled by Thanksgiving. Their current house is fully paid, so they won't be in a bind with 2 payments while they wait for it to sell. They live in a neighborhood with a lot of rental homes, so will probably sell to local landlord. Their DS and family are in our area, so she'll see to it that they get here asap. She needs to find a job, as she's still a few years from retirement. Being in the medical field, she should have no problem - still keeps in contact with a lot of former co-workers here. We had a good laugh about the subject of the bus line running in front of the new house. I told her seniors ride for free. She wondered if she was old enough and asked the age limit. When I told her 60, she laughed and said she guessed they'd qualify. I do hope she retires early so we can have more days to ride bikes and have fun. He will have a good pension, so she can quit when she's ready.

If you could ride a bike once, you can ride again. You just may be a bit shaky until you get going. Bike riding was such a part of my childhood that I love just tooling around the neighborhood. If you get serious about riding again, try looking at the new bikes for "aging baby boomer" - the Townie model by Electra. It even has old-fashioned coaster brakes. Oh - buy a helmet first.

I have a motorcycle class license, but haven't ridden for 20 years. I learned in my late 30s, used a small size bike to travel to work on campus. I found I wasn't a natural at it the way DH and DSs are. I was always tense and afraid I couldn't hold it up. Didn't enjoy all that horsepower, so I stick to me-power bicycle.
