I stayed overnight at DSs on Friday while they were out of town and watched the 2 GrDs. While browsing DDILs book rack, I found an old cookbook I had given her when they were first married. I'd assumed she'd want to learn everything about cooking. Wrong - except for cookies, if it can't be heated up, she doesn't make it. It was Good Housekeeping Cookbook, 1958 edition. The pages are stained and yellowed, I even had it rebound because I loved it so much. Thumbing through it brought back old memories of some dishes. Lots of great variation ideas. Strange part was I gave her the book because we were into "no fat", etc. and all these recipes are all natural. Now, fats are coming into vogue again - go figure. Finally found the recipe for pan fried turkey hash - a leftover favorite. I never could remember the secret to getting the bottom crispy. I asked to borrow the book, DDIL said I could borrow it, but she should have said I could keep it. I'm going to conveniently "forget" to return it....

Jacquie:
For the first 8 Christmas's of my sons marriage, I gave my DDiL Southern Living Christmas Cookbooks.
My Betty Crocker cookbook is from 1958 - a wedding present from DFIL. The spine has come off and it looks terrible, but I still use it. The other favorite is Better Homes & Gardens cookbook - 1960. I picked up the 2000 version at a book sale. Fun to compare and see how old recipes were updated.

I grew up watching Mom use The Joy of Cooking, so when I married in 1970, I bought my own.
