We had a good Christmas Day at DBIL's; all of the women brought at least one main side dish to go with the ham. One nephew is becoming quite the pie and cobbler maker, everything was delicious as usual. Bless DSIL, she puts everything together for at least 20 people.
I've been doing wash today; I'm not going to get caught doing wash on New Year's Day! I was doomed one year, when I had to catch up on all of my wash and dear parent's wash too. I spent the whole next year doing WASH! I am here to tell you that the old superstition must be true; anything you do on New Year's day, you are to repeat it all year long. (Now, I could think of some fun things to do.......)
The house smells like collard greens (which to the uninitiated, smells just like one giant phart...to use Mindy's spelling). I can't find my bottle of ammonia, and the odor is overcoming all of those cute little plugins. I will cook my blackeyed peas tomorrow, and anything else that I think we need. DH would probably like some cornbread, which I haven't made very much in the last few years. Frankly, I still feel overstuffed from Christmas.
I would like to know what y'all prepare for New Year's; I know that the customs are different in other places, but I don't know what they might be. What do you like? Do you do things the way they were done when you were a child?
Meet me at the sink; the egg nog is calling (I'm gaining weight drinking it, so I need help)!

I'll have some of that egg nog, Lottie.
We usually go out dancing at New Year's party, so no special menu. But, we're not doing it this year, we donated the $$ to the food bank. I think I'll make some healthy pizza and settle for a movie. For years I bought pickled herring to have at midnight when the DSs were home, a traditional from a DGrM. Unfortunately, I was the only person here who ate it, so gave it up. I am really tired of ham, will be glad when we are down to the bone. I'd like to cook it with lentils, but DH isn't fond of them, so it will be pinto beans instead. Beans & cornbread is a tradition, don't know why. I think it's just that I'm ready to eat something simple after all the holiday food. I have a New Year's day tradition of going through my spices and tossing the stale ones. Got this from a friend who loved to cook Southern food and insisted on fresh spices. There's something so hopeful about going shopping for new spices in a New Year. Makes me think of all the wonderful things I'll cook. Right. Like the Garam Masala spice mix I bought last year and never used - LOL.

Of course, I have rum!

Hi Lottie, I'll be meeting you at the sink soon, and I will drink anything but not the eggnog--reminds me too much of milk.
